M1A vs M&P 10

I admit I get a little baffled when I read posts like this about the M&P 10 problems. I've owned almost every flavor 7.62/.308 semi-auto out there including 3 M1As, Armalite, Colt LE901, SCAR 17, HK91, FAL and so on. My M&P 10 has been one of the most reliable, accurate and best behaved rifles of the bunch.

Maybe I'm just lucky but I don't think I'm in the minority.

Likewise - same here. 2 M1A's, FAL, HK91, and my M&P10. The S&W has never given me a hiccup in any way.....

Dear Ole-Cowboy,

Your point is well taken about when tshtf, then having a weapon that you have ammo for is most important. I started off stocking up for .308 for my M14, M1A Scout, and M1A Standard. Even have 2 M1 Garands chambered in .308. Got more than a few thousand rounds now, and after seeing the M&P10 at the Houston NRA show I decided to try the M&P 10. While waiting for delivery of the first M&P10 my local gun shop took delivery of one and being in the middle of the frenzy I bought it before they put it on their shelf. That is why I have two.

As for smaller/lighter I have two Mini 14s shooting .223 Nato but not quite as much ammo, but working on it. Again maybe its the Vietnam M16 hex, but the Armalight AR15 I owned was problematic so I sold that during last years Obama frenzy. (Got a lot of money with which I spent on one of the M&Ps)

For small game I have a 10-22 and a new Ruger American bolt action 22WMRF with various shotguns for birds.

If I had to leave in a hurry I'd take all my ammo, my M14 and M1A, my 2 Mini 14s, the 10-22 and two shotguns, one long one short. Then head to my land in the Texas Hill country.

If I still had room left, I'd take my wife.

Yea ok. The SA m14 is not the same one from years ago. No more GI parts, cast reciever, and to top it of any kind of scope is an afterthought. Oh and also ammo picky as far as reliability goes, not accuracy.

I dont own either. In fact I own zero battle rifles, my last being a FAL. But if I bought another 308 it would be an AR variant. Knights, Colt, Noveske....something like that

I do agree about the weight however im a belt fed guy so if you cant one arm a M60, MG42, or a RPD you should stick to pellet guns..

Its all relative

Ammo Ammo Ammo most important. I've been stocking 556/762/6.8 since 2005 I have enough now to last me to the final. I could use 300 BO.
I'd have to pack the wife also she's to good of a shot and too good of a cook.

Well, in my case she don't shoot and probably would not cook the stuff I'll be able to shoot...so it'l be a close call on my part. Maybe instead I ought to take the 2 M1 .308 Garands instead!

I "LOVE" my M&P10...so there, take that!

vfin <--not a fan of WWII Weapons, since it is yr 2013.

Variants of the M1 and it's various prodigy such as the M14 were and are being used in Afghanistan. You might want to research the current generation of the venerable old rifle such as the Navy's MK 14 Mod 0, the Army's EBR and Marine EMR M39.

You might want to edit your WWII comment. ;)

My M&P10 works just fine, thank you. I just took my first deer with it, a 115# doe. I put an old Weaver V16 AO on it. No problems. Of course, mine is just as it came out of the box except for Magpul funiture all around. I also have an M&P15 Sport that has run like a top for over 1200 rounds.

At my age its too late to hunt the hogs, they only come out late.bUt the comments above should be profound for the M14 haters. THe truth is that they (all of them) in Afganistan had to develop Designated Marksmen who had to hit targets at LONG range. THey were all given M14s or variants.

About 15 years ago I went looking for a .308 semi-auto. I wanted sub-MOA accuracy (counter sniper capable). The M1A is a very nice rifle with a great history. I looked into a National Match version. Its competition was the Armalite AR-10T. Both are good rifles but they are radically different platforms with very different dynamics. Shooting the two, the AR out shot the M1A and I purchased an AR-10T. I put Springfield Armory Gen II scope on it. I love it and the AR platform. Fast-forward another 10 years and a buddy wanted to get out of his M1A "Loaded" rifle. Ok, I'm weak. I picked it up to because it makes a great addition to the collection and follow on battle rifle to my M1 Garand. So, back to the comparison shooting bench. The "Loaded" M1A shoots very well but the AR still shoots better. But (and there's always a "but") the M1A is a lot more fun to shoot. I'm not sure why and maybe there's some nostalgia involved but it's just plain fun. It took a while but I'm glad I have both platforms. And besides... more guns is always better.

Forgot... my M1A has Nikon glass. I only shoot Black Hills 168gr Moly Match through my AR-10T. I've tested various match grade ammo (no I don't reload anymore) through it and the M1A. The Black Hills Moly shot the best in the AR. I use some Federal Match in the M1A or a variety of standard grade ammo. When I need highest accuracy at distance the AR does its job. For under 300 yards and for fun, the M1A is the tool for that work.

Just asking, if the AR platform is much better in accuracy why is the M14 Variant the choice in long range shots in Afganistan, for Marines and others? Indeed, with a much shorter barrel I would find it astounding that the AR would even come close to the 22 inch M14 at distance. Maybe 200 yards, but not 1000.

I have a bunch of M14 variants, scoped and iron sights. Love 'em. And a few of them are sub MOA, so the limitation is the round, not the accuracy.

And I have a bunch of ARs, scoped and iron sights. Love them, too.

But for some reason, the AR platform in .308 always seems to kick more than a similarly weighted M14 and in my experience they have been less reliable than the M14.

But I have not used the M&P in .308, so perhaps it is different.

Dave, my understanding is that the m14 and its variants are not the choice for long range shots in Afghanistan. From what I've read its the Knights AR 10 variant. But I haven't been there so I'm at the mercy of the press.

I will say this, as much as I respect the M1A and more so the FAL if I was looking for a new 308 it would be the LMT Modular Weapons System variant of the AR 10. My understanding is that this gun was specked out by the British to be 1 moa with standard military ball. That coupled with the quick change barrel, and ease of adding optics makes this a very desirable platform.

I have not liked the ar pogo stick rifle since 1969 when they took my m14 away & gave me an m-16. mine never malfunctioned, but you had to keep it spotless to work. but that's just me.

Read this,

American Rifleman - The M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle

As I said in a prior post, descendants/variants of the M1, M14 etc are still playing a role on the battlefield in Afghanistan.
