I just bought a Shield 9 and am pissed at myself for not looking at the gun better than I did before I left with it. On the slide with the Smith & Wesson name on it, the engraving is so poor you can only read Smith, nothing else. It shoots great, but looks like **** on one side. I was so concerned about the build date and overall fit I didn't see poor engraving on that side of the slide. Now, do I send it back and be without it for who knows how long or just keep it like it is? I have a 9c but you know how it is when you get something new, if sucks to give it up, if only for a while. What would you do?

If the gun functions perfectly, I would NOT send it in.
I made my living in the motorcycle and automobile business. I have seen to many times when a perfectly running/operating cycle or car was made less reliable because of an attempted repair of some minor cosmetic thing. I don,t believe the firearms industry is any different.
If its not broke, don't fix it! Just my. 02 cents worth.

Send it in. They had mine back to me in a week when I had the safety warranty serviced. They pay for it all as well. Hardest part is getting through on the phone. If you bought it from a store, bring it back.

If i was worried about my weapon being pretty all the time. I'd leave it sitting in the safe and not worry about carrying it.

So far mine is much like my AK. I've put it through hell and back a few times. But it still goes bang each and every time.

On a side note, i dont think the bad guy is going to stop and laugh at u because the Wesson is kind of messed up on ur weapon. If that were the case, we'd have plenty of bad guys running around laughing at the "9mm" label on the side of the slide (cough cough).

"What would you do?"

I would send it back to S&W. A firearm will develop blemishes and wear marks through normal usage, and I can accept that, but when I buy a new firearm I want it to look new. Something like that should have never made it past S&W's quality inspections.

If it will bother you, send it back. Whatever you do, don't bring it back to the store. They won't give you another gun. And if you have them send in the gun, then S&W will not communicate with you on the progress of the repair, as you didn't send it in. The store did, & you don't work for the store. Just send the gun in yourself, & have it fixed. Hope you learned a lesson. Inspect the gun 1000% before taking possession. GARY

Id send it back. You paid for it to be correctly made when u bought it. Im picky abt my guns though. Lol.

If i were you I would send it back. For me, part of the reason for buying this weapon is because of brand loyalty (not the prevailing reason, but it WAS a factor) and if it was my gun I would want to be sure that it has the S&W name and logo on it! Just my $.02

Contact S&W customer service; they will likely send you a pre-paid shipping label; send it in. If it bothers you now....you will just continue to be annoyed with the defect and each time you pick it up, you will be reminded of the defect. Get it fixed or trade it off. Regards, Ed

Man that sucks.
I didn't want to send mine back for a off center front sight than messed it up moving it myself.
If you ever plan on selling it, send it in.If you keep all your guns keep it. JMO It will never be a collectors item.

My 9 Pro had rust on the slide right out of the box. I sent it back to S&W and they sent a new slide and barrel within a week. You can start the process for a Fed X return label on their website. Getting through to them on the phone may require some patience.

Shoot it for a while first. If you have any trouble with function of the arm, then send it back for that, and have them address the engraving at the same time.

Send it back!

Down the road when it has achieved some honest finish wear and you go to sell it, some Gun Show General will point out to you that the name has obviously been "buffed" off in a prior re-finish.

You paid for a new gun and this is not acceptable. This condition would be a show stopper for me.

Did you buy it to collect or to shoot? Did you want a safe queen or a carry piece? Sounds like it shoots the way it ought to. Doubt the Shield will ever make the mark as a collector's model--there's way too many of them. On the other hand, Shield's are back ordered because they're wanted for concealed carry. If you decide to sell it, it's already a used piece. (You've shot it.) Doubt anyone will mistake it for a another model even with the light roll markings... Good luck.
