Shield:Send it in or not?

Perhaps if you contact customer service and provide them a photo, they might just send you a replacement slide.

No matter what though -- you should call them and discuss the options. I am surprised no one else suggested this.

Those who say keep it aren't wrong -- for them. For me, I would call, get a slip, and send it in. (All you need to send is the slide, which should expedite the service and return). Based on your picture, it is pretty cut and dried. You will get another one in no time.

S&W's are superb guns for the price, and possess the accuracy and reliability of guns that cost two or three times as much (and that some guns never achieve). I think you have to get into the essentially hand-built M1911's or other specialty guns, usually running $1500 or more, to achieve better practical accuracy -- that may be debatable, but its hard for a gun at any price to beat 100% reliability, which most M&Ps achieve out of the box. And S&W's are backed up by a great warranty and customer service program, which unfortunately you will probably validate in the near term.

Final thought: it may not bother you now, but if you ever go to re-sell this gun, say to switch calibers or for some other reason, the poor roll mark will detract from its value.

Shoot it for a while first. If you have any trouble with function of the arm, then send it back for that, and have them address the engraving at the same time.

I agree 100%.

That engraving would bug the heck out of me. Already is and it's not even my gun.:D

To me, these are utility guns, not collectors. If it functions fine I would keep it.

What do you do if they give you a new slide and then you have FTE problems?

Cosmetically, it wouldn't bother me - but what else was missed during QC of the slide? Was it QCed at all?

Send it in.

I have contacted customer service and am going to send it in. They said I must send the gun, not just the slide. We'll see how it turns out, I'm kinda anal about things like this and every time I pick it up that's what I see.

Good decision. I would have done the same.

I've never seen one like this. If it's going to eat at you, send it back. No you shouldn't have to. Maybe you'll get an extra mag or something out of it.

Good move. It's what I would have done. Also, you never know what else may up with the gun, since it passed QC like that. Hopefully they will check the whole gun.

Personally I would send it in. Nothing to do with good looks but resale could be affected.

I would keep it since it is now more desirable to have then your everyday 9 shield.

Shield send it in?

I would shoot it as much as you want and if you have a problem or can not stand it as is, send it in for replacement. They will have to replace it. Enjoy it.
