I have recently started looking around at a full-size pistol to keep my carry guns company.

I've been looking a bit at the full size M&P9, and found what looks to be a great price, but I know there are a ton of models. They have both the version with and without the thumb safety, but aside from that - I'm not missing anything am I? I live in Texas, so I'm not looking for one of the 'compliant' variants. Most prices I've seen are $499+.

Free shipping, have to pay FFL fee.

Thanks

That is a good deal. Here in Tampa they are $549 at Gander Mountain.

If you have a concern about getting a recent build (I was) if you can get the S/N from the store you can look it up online to get an idea when it was made. Google 'M&P serial number breakdown'.

That's an interesting comment - what has something changed in recent builds?

There is also the C.O.R.E., the Flat Dark Earth, the Pro and the 5" models.

Ultimately they are all the same. The small differences are:
Color- Flat Dark Earth is kind of tan
Trigger- The Pro series has a better trigger
Barrel length- 4.25" vs 5"
External Thumb Safety- switch to prevent trigger movement
C.O.R.E.- slide is milled to accept a red dot optic.

I've seen them anywhere from $479 to $549 with $499 common around here... $415 looks like a good price to me from what I've seen. I think that retailer is pretty high volume, so I doubt they have old stock, but I suppose anything is possible. BTW, I got a FS 40 a couple weeks ago and the improvement in the trigger's reset from my M&P9C is pretty distinct.

SportsmansSupply has quite a few M&P 9's on Gunbroker and Gunaction. I have bought several items from them and have been pleased with their service.

Yeah, I think as long as it is not one of the state-compliant versions it is what I want. I've purchased from them before. $415 + $30 FFL will work out very nice... thanks

Trigger - a little after shield release and barrel is on its 3rd variation. I'm not 100% on exact times... search here and there's threads on it

When did these improvements start coming out?
There is no specific date or serial number. These "improvements" are what is typically called a rolling update. This means that as one assembly line station runs out of the old parts, they get the new ones. Also, there is no guarantee that they don't mix the old parts with the new ones. So, one gun could get one new part and one old part or it could get all new parts or all old parts. This is just what I've read here and it seems to be backed up by what people report as they talk about their new guns.

Personal experience tells me that they are still producing M&Ps with the older design parts. At least the triggers on guns I've recently handled in the store are no better than the ones I've held previously.

My first m&p was a f/s 9mm. It was a few years ago & the first time I shot it I had a friend with me & we couldn't hit an old metal 5gal bucket sitting on a tree stump at about 20'. VERY embarrassing. My buddy could not hit it either. I got on this AWESOME forum & found out they made an adjustment to the barrel twist rate. Got the updated barrel & its shoots great now :)

Was lookin to get one of these,I never ordered online, whats involved in the process, does the shop you have it sent it to get pissed for not buyin from them,do all costs involved in mailorder equal the shop price.

Interesting article from msw on the new third gen barrel from July 13:

Oh jeez! So now there's another new barrel out there that MAY be better than my replacement barrel? :(

Lol sorry. Might be I guess.

Here is mine, test fire date 10-24-13:

Just purchased my first handgun on Black Friday. Full size M&P 9mm FDE range kit at Cabela's in Green Bay. $519 on sale (got $20 Gift Card prior to entering store for being 1 of first 600 customers, so it covered some sales tax). Picking it up after work this week. Looking to take an intro NRA pistol course. Already bought a Gunvault MV500-STD for it.
Have a lot to learn, but looking forward to the experience!

Welcome to the forum!

Impact Guns has the MP9 full size for $459 now. S&W MP9 at Impact Guns. Most local FFL's charge $25 to do the transfers. It's easy and pain free. I updated mine with the Apex FSS trigger group and Trijicon HD sights.
