Glock 42 : hang onto your shield

Yeah, Glock missed the boat. They will sell tons of them because for reasons I cannot understand the .380 is so popular....with people who've never been involved with a shooting. Yes they recoil less. That and the pistol being small are why it's popular. In my 27 years as a police officer I only saw once where the .380 worked and that was because of multiple rounds straight in the head from about 2 feet away. Even worked a suicide (shot to the temple) where the guy was conscious but died weeks later. Some of the .380 shootees were still fighting when we got there.
I would have bought the small Glock 9, no doubt. Carried flocks for years and they work. Hopefully they'll get their head out of their but and make one. But I still like my shield.
 
I'm so glad I bought my shield last month, instead of waiting on glock to reveal a gun I will never buy.
 
Supposedly the 42 is targeted at the growing female market. Apparently Glock's marketing research tells them this will be big for them. We will see.

Now if they get 42's in the hands of female shooters and get them into shooting they can come along in 12-18 months with a similar size 9 and upgrade many of those women plus sell one to their husbands. Now that would be brilliant.
 
Consider why a 380 caliber around the size of a 9x19 sells. There are people with physicall issues that have difficulty handling the recoil of a G26 or G19 let alone the S&W Shield 9x19. I know at least three people that would look at buying this for this reason. Other people are new to guns and will not invest enough to learn handling a G26 or Shield 9mm.

My two cents.

Yes, it does fill a certain niche. Many people get the idea of buying a Bodyguard, LCP, etc because they think the recoil will be less than a 9mm. Or they buy one for their wife. Those small .380's are not easy to handle, though. Not easy to hit anything with beyond 30 ft, either. There is a market for a slightly bigger .380. Of course there are others out there. I'd rather have a PPK.
 
Thread title equates to my plan exactly. No use for a .380.
 
Placement is everything. A 380 will kill you period. Many people cannot hit anything with larger calibers so 380 is the bullet...More people get killed by 22 lr. every year than any other

Everything Glock makes is a hit...Don`t bet against them...

I'm with ya. We had a ghetto mutt dealer shot point blank with a 380 in the neck. Lived and the bullet is still in him. Technological advances sure did make the 9, 40, 357Sig, 45 very much equal in kills over the last decade but not so much for the 380.
 
Maybe you guys haven't seen what the Winchester 380 PDX can do...
 
Its to big,it should have been a 9 But with the name it will sell..Ill keep the bersaCC
 
This new 380 offering allows GLOCK to get the buzz going for the GLOCK name. It will be the first 380 pistol offered by GLOCK openly available in the US.

Expect another press release when they chamber this frame size in 9mm. It's called marketing. To release the 9mm first would overshadow the 380 release. Releasing the 380 first will cause us "fan boys" to want both guns.

GLOCK owns such a big piece of the market that anything they release will likely be another hit. You have to admit they make a really good product that every other manufacturer has tried to copy for decades.

When the 9mm version comes out I will likely get one... I hope my Shield understands it will soon see the dark recesses of the safe. Additionally, I guess I will have to get a bigger GLOCK table!

There are people that already have the G42. They have stated that a 9mm will not fit in the grip. Now knowing this and how Glock makes guns bigger than they need too, a 9mm version would most likely be bigger and still hold the same amount of rounds as the Shield. This again would not really be competition for the Shield or most other slim 9s on the market.

I'd bet on this and no matter what, my new and second Shield 9 I'm picking up today isn't going anywhere. I own Glocks and like them, but I'm not some brand fanatic. Right now a G42 has 9 days to go on Gunbroker and it's already at $570. :rolleyes:
 
I own and often carry a Sig P238 when I don't have time to strap on the holster for my M&P 9c. I'm looking forward to the G42.

Greg Elifritz has done one of the most sound studies (drawn from police shooting reports) of handgun caliber effectiveness and the results state that there's not a huge statistical difference between .380 and 9mm effectiveness.

But wait the 380 is smaller and less powerful or is it, :evil laugh:. I doubt I will buy a 42 but I am sure it will be way more comfortable to shoot than the LCP, that's just painful imo. The most comfortable 380 to shoot is the PK380, IMO. I am sure this will be similar.

The most comfortable .380 I own is the Sig P 238 - never owned a PK 380.

From the tests I've seen for years, HP 9mm ammo opens up and gets minimum depth or more much more consistently than .380. The 9mm is a better round. I wouldn't carry a .22lr if it statistically put down more people than any other caliber.

WARNING - DOUBLE TAP AMMO CAUSES LOCKUP

American Rifleman did a review. After gushing over it in the first two paragraphs, they went on to say that at 21 feet it's about as accurate as a Taurus 638 or a Ruger LC380, the trigger pull is 2 pounds heavier than advertised and that high performance ammo causes the slide to lock back with a half full magazine!:eek:

They blamed Double Tap for the failure:

"The only two events that could be noted as malfunctions occurred when firing a high-velocity, 95-grain bullet load from DoubleTap Ammunition. Operating at velocities over 1,000 fps in pocket .380s, compared to around 880 fps with typical loads, this round caused the slide to lock open twice (as if the magazine was empty) when there were still rounds left to fire. In both cases, the chamber was clear and the next round in the magazine chambered when the slide was retracted and allowed to fall forward. This is the first time I've had a semi-auto pistol go into slide lock during a test fire. But since the G42 did not lock open with any other load, it seems that the increased pressure produced by this particular round was the source of the problem."

So, be warned: "Caution: Do not use ammunition rated over 880 FPS in this firearm otherwise you may experience unexpected lock-up and failure to operate."
