The sheriff did not destroy the guns. He made sure they went to collectors and helped keep his budget in line at the same time. The department I started with did the same thing about 20 years ago. Included in that trade was one Thompson, four mod 97 Winchesters, three .351 patrol rifles, and a handful of revolvers. They got nowhere near what they were worth at the time. While working security at a gun auction several years ago I watched a class III dealer (there were only two bidding) win the bid on two transferable Thompson's for $18,000. He already had buyers lined up for them at $18,500 each. They bring much more than that now.

I had always heard Glock would trade old mags for new ones for LE agencies. I know when the high cap magazine ban went into efffect in '94 they told all their LE customers to trade in their old mags for new ones. Then they sold them used to non LE customers for about a hundred bucks apiece.

Sheriff Schatzman is an old friend and colleague.
My local department, at which my dad was armorer when I was a kid, also had two 1920-era Thompsons, the nice ones with the front handgrip and Cutts comp. They also had 18 Reising Model 50s. Not sure if they still have them.

So how good a deal it is depends on the "other replacement parts", what they are, how many, etc.

And of course the model(s) and condition of the 14 S&Ws.
