As someone else alluded to, we don't really know all the facts. Some of you guys that cuss the so-called mainstream media are bandwagon jumpers when it comes to stories like this. Let's take a breath and hopefully we will get some real facts on this story.
I also don't buy that this former police captain suddenly lost his cool over a relatively minor altercation and turned the guy into a sieve.

If we ever hear any more about it. Stories like this tend to just vanish from visibility once the sensationalism is gone and the facts are all known - - especially if those facts would make the story more understandable and less sensational.
As you said, we don't know the why, all we know is the what at this point.
People can be pushed past their endurance for all manner of reasons, some rational, some not. Some objective, some not.
I'd love to know the whole truth, but I suspect we never will.

Waiting for more details before I make any heavy comment. My concern is some people take the "contempt" of ABC career or job into retirement then make a situation worse by continuing with same thinking/mentality/attitude... Waiting to see if details emerge later about who did what type of provoking.

Stevie, it's not worth getting killed over but you are wrong about it disturbing others. It's a big distraction to see a bright screen light up in a dark movie theater. I've witnessed many people yelling at the phone perp to turn off the phone or leave the theater. It's freaking rude to text during a movie. Almost as bad as letting the phone ring and actually answering it and carrying on a conversation. Which boils my blood ALMOST as much as people who bring babies, small kids to movies that are not aimed at children. If you can't afford a babysitter- STAY HOME! (sorry, getting off the subject.)

Most of you know I'm not a big supporter of LEOs in general, but I would guess this guy went back to the old man's seat with the intention of whipping his ###, and it didn't turn out like he'd planned.
I expect there's enough blame to go around in this incident.
Whatever happened, it is a sad situation, and a sad commentary on the world in which we now live.

When I was a teen a group of guys tried to rob me at a gas station as I was coming out of the restroom near the back of the station.
I ran - Right into the station's guard dog that was tied up behind the building. The dog mauled me pretty good - The gang ran away.
The Gary Post Tribune article basically said that I attacked a guard dog and was bit....
Two (2) lessons from one (1) experience:
1. DO NOT believe what you read in the paper.

The shooter is 71 and retired PO.
The person with the phone was 43. The movie trailer were playing.
The shooter asked the man to stop using the phone.
The shooter went to find the manager--when he returned there were words exchanged.
The person with the phone stood up to the shooter.
Now what we don't know is did the phone guy attack the 71 year old.
I am 73 and i am not going to take a beating from anyone.
The shooter staed and helped give CPR and stayed until the police arrived and the phone guy was transported.
Do we have another Trevon situation ? Sounds like it. This time there are witnesses.

Now that we know what the shooters pedigree is back to 50 years ago his cop job, rank, what he did while he was on the department and that he was chief of security for bush gardens, set up neighbor hood watch programs, has a son also LEO, etc; Does anyone here know or CARE what the dead victim did for a living? Inquiring minds want to know.
I see where the shooter left to speak with managment before push come to shove. I also see where he LEFT his wife sitting right behind the texter when he went to complain. He wasnt scared at that point.
He was mad and THEN got scared when he stirred up a 6 ft 5" beast that wasnt too impressed by his pedigree. He wasnt used to THAT out of uniform. I really think he forgot what he was wearing that day.

I'll just add this here.
Not too long ago rude people were given a tune up. Educated so to speak. It kept down on rude behavior when people understood it could result in consequences. These days rude behavior is allowed, anything one might do to deter it carries worse consequences than those suffered by the rude moron. Stupid people used to get gobbled up in machines without guards, fall from high places with out rails etc. Now days every effort is made to protect the stupid and the rude and they have flourished to the point that the world is full of them and you can just about expect to encounter them when out in public.
I liked it better when less of them were around.

I believe serious restraint in this situation, the guy would have to have pulled a gun in order for me to risk shooting through this guy and killing some innocent kid or adult, not worth it to me unless it was seriously life threatening.

I haven't been to the movies since JFK, and the only guy who got shot during that show was on the screen. I hate modern movies and have no desire to sit in a dark room full of strangers when I can pretty much watch anything I want at home through the modern miracle of streaming video. The snacks are better too.
That old goat should have kept his eyes on the screen, sure there is a little light on a cell phone but let's face it, it is not a high intensity halogen. It was the previews for crying out loud.

I read somewhere that that is how it went. The six foot plus young guy attacked and hit the 71 year old, and he shot in self defense.
You can never read these stories from anti-gun media, you are assured of getting the facts wrong.

I agree. It was not a justifiable shoot. I do not agree that the rude behavior of the victim wasn't somewhat responsible for what happened.

I'm not changing my stance and I still think this was something that got blown way out of proportion. But, a court could find the shooting justifiable if the 43 year old attacked the old man regardless of how it started.
I would disagree with that because the old man should have had the sense to leave it alone after he went to speak with the manager. The dead guy should have had the common courtesy to just put his phone away. Both of them should have been adult enough to come to some resolution without a physical altercation.
