Glad to see that the Mod reopened this thread after closing it earlier today. I didn't understand why that happened. This is a legitimate conversation, though the cop/donut comments didn't add much.

Open carry (bear) is as much a part of the 2A as anything thing else. I don't recommend practicing that right in population centers when conceal carry is an option.

California was interesting because it isnt a Shall Issue state and a lot of folks have been arbitrarily denied permits at the discretion of their local anti-gun hoplophobic Sherrif. Given the choice of being unarmed or open carry, I would choose open carry. Unfortunately, some CA gun owners chose to use open carry for demonstration purposes. Some were thoughtless jerks, but my guess is that a lot were decent folks just fed up and frustrated with not being able to obtain a concealed carry permit. It's got to be a tough place for gun owners to live and deal with so much infringement.

As far as parading around with an AR on your shoulder... that's just being a knucklehead screaming for trouble.

I completely agree with the OP. It makes all gun owners look bad.

Further, it creates work for cops that have better things to do. These same idiots will proclaim loudly that the police aren't out investigating crimes. Well one reason for that is they have to deal with these idiots.

How about if she said a guy was walking down the street with a dog on a leash?

No. They would not send out a car. The operator at the station would say, "Ma'am, there is nothing illegal about that", or something similar.

If you call and complain that someone is washing his car or cutting his grass or taking a sunbath or clipping the hedge, or any number of LEGAL ACTIVITIES, the cops won't send out a car. At least I hope they wouldn't. Why? Because nobody is doing anything wrong.

Check what? No crime was reported.

So why, when the little old lady calls and says, "There's a man walking down the street in front of my house and he's WEARING A GUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Why don't they just say, "There's nothing illegal about wearing a gun, ma'am."?

I'll admit that I have open carried in the past. But it is not something that I have made a habit.

The ONLY times that I have open carried was when I was having either breakfast or lunch with the local, to my farm, county and state LEO's after we finished deer hunting/target shooting/clay busting out at my place. (It's always good to be friendly with the local LEO's when you're a non-resident property owner).

OC is something I'm not uncomfortable with, it's just not for me. I'd rather have the element of surprise on my side rather than be the first target of some scum bag or be the whipping post of a LEO that's having a bad day or doesn't know/understand the Tennessee codes.

I know it makes people mad but open carry is just wrong. It's not illegal but it's wrong. Somebody in the mall or restaurant is going to call the police. The police will have to question you. You will of course have your camera ready. You will spout your rights and hope to make a scene. If you can get the cop agitated then you get a lot of viewers on your You Tube channel. In the mean time anti gunners will use your taunting the police as a reason to not allow guns in public. If your really don't want to make a scene, throw a loose shirt over it or drop your Tshirt over it. Somebody might think they know you have a gun but they won't really be sure and your not flaunting it.
That's just my opinion...I could be wrong!
Edit, for all I know the people that are doing that are the anti-gunners. People that want to keep their guns would not be so stupid...I hope.

The difference should be obvious, but since it isn't let me help you out. A gun has been used to kill many people by deranged individuals. People have not been killed by someone washing his car,nor has there life normally been threatened by someone walking the dog.

I understand where you were trying to go but you associations are not valid. How is it a problem if you show your ID? That way if nothing happens no problem. Additionally the officer wants to make sure you are not one of the nut jobs who is about to do something nefarious...

I thought you were referring to cops getting free doughnuts. Now, I have et a few free ones, and a bunch that were half price. There was seldom a doughnut shop in the city where I worked.

We had to transport juveniles to Birmingham when they were arrested. Had to drive by the Krispy Kreme shop to get there. Always loved to see that "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign on.

I can't speak for everyone here, so MY take is..The majority of the folks here on this forum do support the Open Carry...I do agree it's not the smartest thing to do...Carrying a big black gun into some shopping mall, is really no different that yelling "Fire" in the movie theater.

In some instance's it might be appropriate to carry a weapon/gun in the open, others NO.

It's MY estimation that 98.8% of those who are trying to profess their Constitutional Rights have no idea what the other portions say. This is indeed unfortunate.

It drives ME and you others of the silent majority to get our hackles up when we read or hear about those that proceed to make a mockery of one of our sacred Rights.

What to do about those types??? I don't have a coherent answer..I guess to go on my way, and continue to believe in what is right and wrong..(As I was taught) and hopefully My sense of right and wrong will rub off on one who does not know those differences.

For may of you others here, and especially those who are or have been in Law Enforcement....Remember the old Burma Shave slogan.
