I thought the ammo stampede was over. Went to buy .22LR for some fun plunking. Wow! no .22LR to be had. Prices on other types up 33% from last time that I looked. What's going on?

Up 33% from the last time you looked?!?!?
Where do you live and when was the last time you looked? Over a Year ago?
While prices are up from the Oct/Nov '12 panic, they haven't gone up around my area recently.

And yeah... 22LR is still hard to come by, as most everyone buys the store Daily limit when they do come in. ;)

I think the last time I bought ammo when I wasn't actually at a range and wanting target ammo to be . . . October? November? With the nice weather coming in, I went to buy some last weekend and the price had jumped from $20.00 a box to $33.00. Maybe that one merchant was price gouging, but I started to look around and noticed a significant increase on the types of ammo that I was familiar with.

I want to go shoot paper targets with my 617! I can't find ammo; well, I found some online but it was $18.00 a box. The entire point of shooting a .22LR was to be able to shoot a lot at a low price. I go to the range now to practice and have to leave my beautiful 617 behind.

I hope that things stabilize soon at a lower price point.

I've heard so many stories about what's going in with 22 and don't know what to believe. I think the real reason has to do with the factories making other calibers (9 and 556 to name a couple of popular caliber) because demand for them is so high. The hoarders are not helping matters either. And, with a lead plant in Missouri closing down, I don't know if that has any effect or not. Bottom line is that I'm not shooting much 22 at the moment either.

Well I picked up three boxes of TulAmmo 9s 115 FMJ (50 round) today at Wally's for $10.97/box, three box limit. Didn't think that was too bad :D

(had probably 20 on the shelf)

22 lr and 22 mag

I get all I want from gun broker dot com. Just bought 1000 rounds of LR and 1500 rounds of Mag.

Its demand folks. We went from 80 million gun owners to over 100 million gun owners in an extremely short period of time. This new demand destroyed the just in time production and delivery systems that were in place.

Now people complain about hoarders but there is no such thing as there is nothing to hoard. Deliveries of 22lr are at lower levels than they were in 2012 before the shortage manifested itself.

I definitely wouldn't say this is anything new. Not much different now than back in late 2012. Just not enough supply for a continually increasing demand. Thanks to Barry O and his gun-grabbing buddies for spiking the sales in firearms to an all time high!

Walked into the LGS last week and they actually had some .22 LR in stock. $6.00 for CCI Blazers and $8.00 for CCI Std. Vel. After browsing around and gritting my teeth for a while I plunked down $64 for a brick of the Blazers. At least I can take my grandson out to do some plinking now and keep some of my nicer stuff for more serious target shooting.

Did you get kissed at those prices? I would never go back.

Ammo is like any other commodity driven by supply and demand. Buyers can affect the pricing if you are patient.

Like anything else the mfgs will either lower their prices to sell or they will close shop if there isn't enough profit to be made. Volume is not a problem. They all sell what they can mfg.

The flip side is if some close their doors the remaining have less competition and can affect the pricing too. It is a balance - and sometimes not in a plinkers favor.

Your brick of Blazers @ $64 were $24 at my LGS - Sportsmans Warehouse last weekend... They had 3 cases that lasted about 3 hours and much was bought by people that didnt really need it - but for re-sale and hoarders. Some think manufacturers making other ammo is to blame for the 22 shortage - but has anyone thought past this and figured out they cant make 9mm or other ammo on machines designed for rimfire? Increased gun owners and gun sales have driven up ammo demand.

Im doing my part--concentrating on .45--which btw--just saw a $2 hike in price today at WM--which was why I didnt buy any--3 box limit still in place.

Being too lazy to look it up, how much did you pay for the 1000 rds?

1000 rounds of Winchester Super X for $200.

CORREDTED. SORRY I TYPOED THIS ORIGINALLY. The Winchester Super X LR 1500 rounds was $149. The $200 I paid was for 1000 rounds of Hornady V-Max 22 WMR.

I saw your ammo at the gun show I attended in Lawrenceville, Ga last weekend. The low price on bricks of .22 started at $55 and ranged to a high of $89. Yes they were the same bricks sold at Walmart and Academy.

Someone just had the motivation and timing to obtain them and attempt to resale at a fantastic margin. Didn't see anyone whipping their wallet out to purchase at these prices..

Since .22 rimfire is getting close to the price of 9 m/m I am beginning to think I need a 9 m/m revolver to use for plinking. Larry

Go 38 and start to reload. I just started to reload (mostly 38 so I don't have to chase cartridge casings around but also 9MM).

I can load range rounds for about 13 cents a round. Just about what some folks are getting raped for rimfire ammo. Plus, you roll your own supply so you can gear and go when you want. I've heard of folks that reload revolver cartridges for dozens of times.

I currently just use a Lee hand press (minimal initial investment) and it serves my purposes - for now.
