Wikipedia describes it as:

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry; by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions.

My wife says that I display some of these symptoms in various situations.

- We share a safe where I keep my pistols and she keeps some of her jewelry. I am very "concerned" that all of the pistols are sitting "properly positioned" and undisturbed in their racks.
- I cannot walk past a drawer that in not completely closed without going back to fully shut it.
- Coming into the house, if I notice a branch or piece of trash that is laying in the yard... this causes me agitation until I go back and remove the offending piece.
- Every day I run a 2 mile course and have a streak going of 272 consecutive days (but who's counting?). I start getting antsy if I think that something is going to cause me to miss a day.
- If something sticky (like honey or jam) gets on anything I'm around, I can not rest until it's wiped clean and sticky-free.
- Putting on my shoes or socks, I must put on the left one first... otherwise, they just don't feel right.

I have no idea why she thinks of me this way. It's just normal for me. How about you?

I know what you mean - each morning I sit on the bed and look at my shoes and socks trying to decide - should I do sock/sock, shoe/shoe or sock/shoe, sock/shoe and then there's the right/left thing.

And then I have a long, decision laden day ahead :D:D

Your wife is just Lackadaisical. Make her shut drawers all the way and various other things. She is your problem.
DAMHIK.

Let me help you out and relieve all of that anxiety... The correct process is Left Sock, Right Sock, Left Shoe, Right Shoe. Then it's compulsory that you take the first step with the left foot. This goes for both walking and running.

Now isn't that better?

Could you come over to my house and clean my yard? I do manage to close the door when I leave. I couldn't even tell you which sock I put on first. I just try to see that they match.

I'm a bit that way myself but let some go because I'm lazy too. I thought maybe I was the only one that did the left then right shoe thing and glad I have company.
My brother and Mother were the same way except they were counters too. My brother can tell you how many people are in a restaurant or how many ceiling tiles in a room.
I worked with a guy that had it real bad about open drawers, door locker handles not straight and service manuals upside down on a book shelf. We used to mess things up just to drive him nuts and it did.

I used to worry about "the little things", but 2 teenaged boys, a houseful of pets, an unruly lawn and property and a bunch of slobs at work have cured me.

Now I ask myself "is it really worth the effort and angst"? It's a Zen-thing. I've become at peace with disorder....ohmmmmm!

I'm much the same in my habits, sounds like your a well organized and disciplined person to me. However, you wife may need to change to meet your standards.....Have her work on that, instruct her as needed.

I've been told I'm borderline OCD, but I don't know. My shoe/sock thing is left sock, left shoe, right sock, right shoe. I do things unthinkingly in number patterns, & its not the same number for all the tasks, it just depends on what the task is. I have different numbers for each one. I prefer even numbers, but some things I do an odd number of repetitions. It doesn't bother me when someone else does the same task in a different way or number, just me.

no-I have SMCRWS-severe motorcycle riding withdrawal syndrome, do to a crazy winter, and a number of attending factors. It wouldn't be so bad, but I'm in Florida!

This sign posted in the Men's room of a local restaurant (The Oak City Meatball Shoppe) impressed this OCD patient enough for me to snap a pic the other night.

My friend has it. I posted about getting stuck during the election. Andy mentioned that the tent cots were not organized properly and arranged them neatly in the the tent. The next afternoon we go in and they were in a large stack.
He organized them properly again. I bit my tongue and hoped he did not find a broom and mop.!!!!!

I do have OCD, and I was also an only child raised by two parents who were obsessed with cleanliness and order. In my home growing up, for example, you immediately made your bed upon arising. Everything had its place, and everything had to be in its place. My wife was one of seven children, raised in a small house, and to say that chaos reigned is putting it mildly. We had a lot of adjustments to make, but after 35 years of marriage we have managed to survive.

In terms of my OCD, which I have in addition to my need for cleanliness and order, there are certain things that I just need to have. For example, we have a panel of 3 light switches at each of the two entrances into the kitchen that control the same lights (overhead, bar, and counter.) I have to have one set all up and one set all down. (My wife will purposely mix them up to mess with me.) The TV volume level has to be on an even number. I can't stand to see a drawer or closet door left ajar. I even like to load my 12 or 16 or 17 round magazines with 10 or 15 rounds because I can use two or three 5-round rows out of the box and it doesn't leave a partial row in the box.

It's not like I will freak out if these things aren't done my way, so it's a matter of strong preference rather than a compulsion.

Years ago I was accused of being OCD because I washed dishes after every meal. No dishwasher in the house bar me, so what else was I going to do, wait until the roaches complain the scrapings are mouldy and then clean up? My accuser was my best buddy who washed dishes when he could no longer get into the sink to rinse a beer glass. Hmmm.:p
