At the range today to shoot my 3913LS for the first time and happened to bring along my 6" 586...one always seems to sneak in the bag. Ran into a nice gentleman with a 6" Python and we each noticed the other had a blued revolver so naturally a conversation ensued. Now, I used to own a beautiful royal blue 6" Python and can't say enough about how pretty they are but as I recall the reach to the trigger was long and the trigger stacked. We traded for a few rounds and sure enough...there was that long reach and not so good trigger pull! I have on occasion regretted letting the Python go but today put that solidly in the past and I won't look back again. IMHO the 586 is also a great looking gun and clearly a better shooter at least for me. I can forgive the long reach to the trigger as just my small hands but I'm sorry...the trigger is average at best. Smooth yes, but can't get past the stacking.

To those that love the Python I say fine, great, glad you like it...but I'll be keeping my Smith revolvers and just admire the pretty Python from a distance.:p

Not hating...just sayin'.

edit: I'm not slamming Colt or Pythons, only commenting on the stratospheric status of the Python that is sometimes difficult for it to live up to. I give it due respect as one of the premier revolvers ever made so don't come after me on that!

Really ironic that you post this.Python was my grail gun.Bought one 18 years ago.Am in the process right now of selling it.Never thought I would. Was pretty to look at.Tremendously accurate. Not really afraid to shoot it but kinda leery. Now I'm gonna be 60 real soon.Maybe an impending job loss in the next year or so.Trying to be a little pro active if you know what I mean.Yeah it stings a little but not as much as I thought. It just don't mean as much now as it did then.

Ponies are cool... I have an uncle who owns a nice bright stainless Python he bought brand new in the early 80's and has fired about 3 cylinders of rounds out of. It's a darned nice piece and I wouldn't mind owning one similar some day... If I win the lottery! I can't believe the prices they fetch!

But all said and done, I have a modest yet nice little collection of Smiths and I am not crying myself to sleep each night because I don't have a Pony in the safe yet... And I wouldn't trade any one of my Smiths for a Pony no matter how valuable the Ponies may be. (as if a trade like that would ever happen anyway!)

I didn't own my Python for as long as you've had yours so it wasn't part of me like yours might be to you. But...you can sell the Python...take half the money to the bank and the other half to a nice 586 and never miss a beat.:)

I sold my python about 5 years ago and tripled my money, thinking I did real good. Well if I would have waited until now, I could have done a lot better.
Ya live and ya learn! :)

Never will understand why it has to be one or the other. Having both,as well as others, works just fine for me. :)

Most is goin' to the bank and I'm gonna play with some of it.If I croak the wife would just spend it on something useless(I love her but she ain't got a clue.)

It's cool to come out ahead! I actually traded my Python for a 3" 66-3 plus $$. The 3" 66 hadn't quite taken off yet and not as iconic as the Python so I did well on that deal given what has happened since. I wouldn't trade my 66 for a Python straight across today...not that the 66 has that value but it does to me.;)

Get both.

Have S&Ws and Colts.

Never yet found a single S&W that comes close trigger wise to my Officers match .38 or .22 from the late 40s and early 50s and that includes 4 and 5 screws. However, in the end, both makes are uniquely American and I wouldn't care to choose one make over the other.

My biggest complaint with Colt is that they are now going for so much money that one sometimes hesitates to take them out. Give it a few more years and S&W's [the older ones] are going to be the same way.

At the time I bought mine I could have bought a second one and been out the door for under a thousand dollars.I had the money at the time to do that but was trying to do the right thing and be responsible with my money.Had I only known.Oh well you know what they say about hindsight.

Well, how did the 3913LS shoot. I have the 3913 and it is one fine performer.

Outstanding as expected! It is (was) LNIB unfired outside of factory...not going to my grave letting someone else shoot it first!:) 124g target load and 147g a bit hotter load (not maxed out)...all my loads...100% feed, fire and eject. 124g poa and the 147g a hair lower but all grouped well. What else have we grown to expect from a 3rd gen?

Sorry for the drift...:o

Ralph right now I have quadrupled plus I don't have enough years left to do that again. So I figure it's time and I still got a mess of Smiths to play with. That quadruple deal takes a lot of sting out of it.When you consider I've only put 200 rounds through that Colt in 18 years I won't miss it that much.

Nice to hear you are happy with your decision, the pythons sure are pretty guns, but I have never shot one. I have wondered if they would ever start making them again. Ed.

Made my personal decisions in the Colt vs. S&W and Pepsi vs. Coke wars 30 years ago...........

I prefer the S&W K-frame trigger and the like grip options better.......... and there is nothing like an ice cold Coke!!!!!!!

Too each their own....... since the 1850s

Pythons and Diamondbacks sure are pretty to look at though.........and if I was casting a TV show........Python all the way.......wouldn't be caught "Walking Dead" without one by my side....LOL.... but I would use a 586 as it's stunt/shooting double.

Yeah, I like that Python Rick carries in that show. It's nice to see a popular show like that not do the easy/popular thing and just go black plastic when it comes to casting the handguns :)

But I'm sorry to tell you, Pepsi trounces Coke all day, every day! LOL! ;)
