If you are a sensitive soul who likes then US being Eastern Time centric, leave now. If you are on the East Coast and work for a bank, get in your bunker, cuz here it comes.:mad::mad:

Soooo, I get off work at the usual time, 4PM Pacific, and make a run to my bank to deposit a bank draft I received from the UK. The bank was slow as one of their tellers was off for TWO funeral today. That blows.:(

I finally get to a teller and she fills in the deposit slip and tries to deposit the draft. Something starts complaining on her machine and she has to get somebody senior to help. The senior person has a go and comes up with this gem.

"Oh, you cannot deposit foreign stuff after 5 PM Eastern. They have to verify the funds".

OK, I say, so put it through the system for me in the morning. They cannot do that, I have to be there. Guess again I say. I'm at work for 7:30 in another part of town. I told them flat out that I would do it at the bank over there except I would probably be safer in Lower Beirut. They sort of agreed with me on that point.

Then the real kicker, it is AT LEAST a 20 minute process while they contact New York.

Now let me explain why this gets me bristling like that big frilled critter that spat venom on Jurassic Park.

1) This is a national bank in a large country that covers multiple time zones. Who died and appointed some idiot on the East Coast God to run all US bank business on Eastern time. Huh? I mean, REALLY??:(:mad:

2) I pay my way and my bills on time with almost Taliban fervour. I always have. Somebody saying "they are going to verify funds" just pushes the red mist with thunder and lightning button for me. IF I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY I WOULDN'T FREAKIN' BE HERE.:mad::mad::mad:

I had similar BS from another bank over me getting power of attorney on my late wife's account. It wasn't on their form and she wasn't there.

"Oh, which part of she is bedbound in a skilled nursing facility did you not understand. This POA was prepared by a qualified NV attorney according to the laws of this state. If your bank is unhappy operating under the laws of this state perhaps I should have a word with the State AG's office about your continued presence here"

That got their attention, but the POA still had to be cleared by a bank attorney IN FREAKIN NEW YORK. Hello? America is a big place and maybe you have attorneys on the West Coast, too? Not with any authority, apparently.

I'll be blunt. The only reason the banks are still standing and the heads of their staff don't line the roads, Game of Thrones style, is that most of us dislike the alternative. You know, the one where the currencies are bottled water, tinned food, ammo, gasoline and nubile daughters. I think those zeebs in the banking racket need to be reminded of this, from time time.

PS. If any of you lot get this thread locked or removed by political comment, I'll be doubly PO'd.:p

Steve, I'd settle for the bank people who schedule me out for a service visit aren't calling at 6:15 AM the next day asking me why I wasn't on site when the bank opened 15 minutes ago... they always act so surprised when I tell them the local time. I mean, really. Your job requires you to schedule service calls all across the country, and you can't figure out what time it is in Seattle?

I have bank accounts in Japan and the US. Checks are not used in Japan, at least by ordinary folks, and have very large processing fees. If someone mails me a US check, I can deposit it from Japan either by mail to my bank in Hawaii, or more recently by taking a picture of it with my iPhone and using my banks app to transfer it electronically.

I can transfer money from my Japanese account to my US checking account with a phone call. I rarely transfer money directly from my US account to my Japanese account, but I do use a credit card in Japan, and elsewhere, that is tied to my US bank.

I would discuss with your UK bank, if transferring from your own account there to your US account, as to the easiest way of doing this. If the money from the UK is not from your own account, perhaps you can ask whoever is sending you the money to wire it to your account in the US. You just need to provide details that your bank can give you about your account.

(No rhyme or reason in the modern world, my friend. You just have to figure out the procedures to get around the numbskulls you encounter along the way. :))

I could name a few bankers that are a lower life form than the lawyers in the jokes.

Worst example: We have no record of your account. I was standing there with my check book from that bank.

Wasn't an option on offer or I'd have used it.

Fired 35-40 minutes getting it done at the Lower Beirut branch in North Las Vegas today. Those that live here will know where I mean.

Oh, they were happy to receive the draft, so long as it was before 1400 Pacific so they could check the funds were there with New York.

Today when they said they would get confirmation I said, "Really? Do you think the bank in England would have mailed me the draft without the funds being there?"

It's really odd to see the reaction when you talk back to bank staff. They get ever so baffled.
