Is there anything better than a Model 19?

I'm getting that there's some 'inside' jokes going on here. I'm quick like that.

"RIDE-RED" & me are friends in "real life".
Last year I offered him a 686 no-dash (one of his grail-guns) to trade even for his 19-3 (both of our grail-guns). He couldn't bring himself to let go of his 19 (I don't blame him;)).
He declined, and I ended up selling the 686 to his brother.
I have since acquired a 19-3 with a little less wear than his. Now I like to pick on him for it. ;)

All in good fun.

P.S.
My 586 is still my favorite.

All in good fun indeed! I love my model 19's and my 686's. I have a 686 no dash 6 inch and a no dash 4 inch (both square butts obviously), and a 686-3 2 1/2 inch and a 686-4 4 inch both round butts. My 19's are a dash-3 6 inch and a dash-4 4 inch both with 3T's and love them all. I pick up on any posts comparing these sweet revolvers. Carry on!

I love Model 19s, but I guess this is where I go into Being-In-Minority-Mode again...because yes, I think there is something better than the Model 19...and my choice will probably surprise you because it isn't a Smith.

It's the Ruger Security-Six in .357 Magnum. The thing is built like a Caterpillar D-9, and you really have to try to break one. No sideplate at all. Disassembles by removing one screw.

I have a pre-warning (1974) Security Six in stainless steel with a 2.75-inch barrel and target stocks. Compare the frame thickness with an M19's. You aren't going to get cracked forcing cones and bulged top straps with this gun unless you just simply screw up big time. Don't get me wrong...the 19 is a rapier while the Security-Six looks like a blunt instrument. And feels like one. It's just steadier in my hand than a 19.

At 15 to 20 yards, the Security-Six is a stone killer. The photo below of the target is 12 shots at 20 yards with the cartridges pictured in the other photo. I'm kinda old, had cataract surgery on both eyes, and wear bifocals. I don't think I could control a 19 well enough to do what I've done with the Security-Six.

All this is just my opinion. Y'all don't hate me, okay?

M19's.....

In a word, no. It's the do-it-all, all-terrain-vehicle of revolvers! There ISN'T much that cannot be accomplished with a Model 19. And it's classy too...

Sure there are some better guns for certain jobs. But if you are talking about general purpose shooting, that's the ticket.

What, exactly, is "general purpose" shooting? Or since it's "general purpose", can it be specifically defined? That's sort of like referring to a guy as a "Jack of all trades", isn't it?

So would that make the Model 19 the best "all-around" revolver ever made?

I find a nicely blued Model 19 one of the best eye candy Smiths out there. It is proportioned at 4" to look just right. It does exactly what the OP says it needs to do. I love the model 27 too. For pure proportioning, the Model 19 4" and the 27 3" are the 2 best esthetically balanced guns out there.

Can't be hatin' because the Security Six is an excellent piece of gear. I have had several, carried the 2 3/4" on some assignments, used various versions of the Six as training guns. They are , arguably, stronger than K-frames. The trigger takes a little more work to "slick up" than does the 19 but it can be done. Like the M19 with a 2 1/2" barrel, it takes a specially sized holster but that holster is far harder to find.

The Six in all its variations (Security Six, Speed Six, Police Service Six) is as had to find here in the People's Republik as are M19s, and just as pricey when you do.

Like Watchdog, I don't buy new guns (in general). One of the few new ones I have purchased, an M640, is back at Smith getting its canted barrel repaired. :(

I know it was rhetorical, but I was going to say "Yes," "Model 28-2," "Model 27-2," in that order.

Groo here
If it fits , hits where and when you want , and can do what you need--
NO.

No. Absolutely not. The only thing possibly a little better than a model 19 would be a second model 19. Regards 18DAI
