It needs to be passed. I was deer hunting with my good friend in Texas. We start to leave and I say to wait a minute so I can take my holster off my belt with my S&W in it.

He looks at me curiously, I said "I did not want to be arrested by some small town hick cop because I was carrying my shooting iron while eating my grits".

He laughed pretty good at my comment, since HE was the ONLY Law Enforcement Officer for the town!!!!

Now Texas is one of ONLY SIX states prohibiting open carry of handguns.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but at any rate or definition of "open carry" the Lone Star State is one of the FEW. So how is it that one can be "not surprised" that Texas would consider it, short of ignorance. (that means lack of knowledge, which is different from stupidity).

The attitude that "all not prohibited shall be compulsory" is exactly what we seek to avoid. The "pro choice" advocates should certainly understand that.

When studying Texas history, one will see that due to a large and populated international border, with way more hostilities than more isolated/ insulated states a lot of "common practice allowances" made restrictions a sort of moot point. We've always been open carry long gun, and a handgun in the glovebox was very normal and not a problem with law enforcement until only recently (though not illegal).
This state has grown in population and the common practice allowances were changed by the immigrants from less self reliant states, and immigrants from foreign nations unfamiliar with our customs. Montana and some other states have had a much less convoluted road. we're tryin'.

While I have a Concealed carry permit, I seldom do. Crime where I live is almost non existent. I often load some guns in the ccar and head for the range, but no permit needed for that. During hunting season I often wear a pistol when going out hunting, stop at gas stations or whatever. Here nobody even really cares or notices then as it is normal. If I was to open carry most of the time most of the people wouldn't care, they would just think I was an idiot carrying a gun for no good reason.

Read all the posts and am a little amazed at the range of responses found among members of a gun forum. United we stand and divided we fall. And falling is what many would like to see happen. We all need to think long and hard before speaking or we might lose the rights we have and once lost they will be very hard to regain. Just my two cents.

We have a solid core of liberals in and around Austin, which is our state capital, and they seem to infect the legislature. I am always amazed that Texas isn't the most gun-friendly state in the USA...but sadly, it's not. I sincerely hope that changes, but realistically, I don't think we will see significant change in one big leap...just incremental, but I sincerely hope we do even that.

I contend that the way to curb gun violence or even just violence is to do away with big cities or separate them. If you compare the crime rate of the million people of Montana against any city of a million or more it would be way lower. Very few rural areas have high crime rates. All large cities have high crime rates.


In small towns and rural areas people know a bigger percentage of their neighbors and everyone know who the jerks are. If you act like a jerk in a town of under 10,000 pretty soon everyone knows you are a jerk and you will get treated as one. In a big city you can be a jerk to lots of people everyday and hardly every run into one of them again. That anonymity goes a long ways towards having a bunch of people that could care less about those around them. Plus, in the little area the well to do have some real association with the poor and visa versa. In the bigger cities they stratify and the poor mostly get crowded together and the rich mostly associate with each other. Much easier to disregard and have contempt for each other. Here in my little town of 6000 I am a person. In a city of 1,000,000 I am just a number.

The way I see it, if that bunch down in Austin could tax or

fee permit open carry, it would pass without too much objection.

Money is what greases the wheels.

If there isn't any profit in it...They'll drag their feet as long as they can.

Corpus is getting bigger.I just heard yesterday that they are figuring we will almost triplethe current population here in FIVE years. Right now were approx 333,000 as it is--or at least 30,000 in the last 10 years. Im HOPING we dont go "South" and get all the Calif and NY troubolemakers here!!!

That said, its still sane here.
