Probably Would Have Been Better off Keeping My Mouth Shut

I always share stories with a friend of mine from downtown in the school of hard knocks. Had I told him your story, he would have stopped me when she said she had a gun on her seat. He would have said something like, "Where I live, they would have just said thank you for the gun."

So, unsolicited advice feels like criticism. Guess that's why we resent it.

Hmmm.

I guess the corollary must be true also: unsolicited criticism feels like.....advice. Guess that's why we resent that, too. :)

Smoke,

+1 on BCD and Pasture. You did the right thing, it didn't cost you anything, and despite her response, she might have learned something. Good for you!

P.S. That's a bleepin' GUN she's running around with. She SHOULD learn the right way to do (or not do) things.

(snip)

...she's telling him and everyone else in ear shot how she just recently got her carry permit and how she's already had to pull her gun once.

Her story was she was putting gas in her car and a homeless man approached her and asked for money, she refused and he became belligerent. According to her she turned her back to him, reached into her car, got her gun, laid it on the seat and turned around. Then she tells the guy "Mr. I have a gun and I'm not the person you want to mess with."

I should have known better but at that point I interjected that she probably would have been better off if she had the gun in hand before she opened her mouth....

She was likely just running her mouth and making up a story. Her new carry permit gun fantasy didn't need correction. ;)

It never occurred to me to want her to be "grateful" I was just hoping she'd think about it next time she opened her mouth to tell the world she has a permit.

Which leads me right back into my opening statement. Learning to keep my mouth shut has been hardest lesson in my life.

I was referring to some of the other comments, not yours. And you do now realize that the "hired help" doesn't address the protectee, right? THAT would be the error in all this.... which to me means you otherwise did fine.
All I've seen in this is a lot of misunderstanding about how these scenarios are supposed to play out. I guess I can't get the point across.
Back to preparing to retire. 11 days and counting...!

I get the point. I just hope the next time I'm in this situation I get the point then too

A guest speaker was brought in to my church a couple of years ago. Though now a Christian he use to be a Islamic Terrorist (from Lebanon), as because of that, and his willingness to talk "freely" about things they do...he is a marked man.
Our church security team includes current/former police officers, FBI and Homeland Security Agents, and local sheriffs.
Believe you me, the speaker appreciated (and followed) every instruction given to him, and he really appreciated the bomb sniffing dogs being brought through before hand!

Same guy has spoken at our church. The house was packed out.

Ten and a wake up. Stay safe, thank you.

I have absolutely no intention of making this woman's name public. She is a nationally known author and speaker and she can afford better lawyers than me.

ETA A little explanation may be in order here. One of my coworkers writes professionally, one day I quoted him by name on the internet. The next day he walked into work and told me very clearly that if he ever saw another quote of his or even a reference to him that he could attribute to me on the internet he would sue me.

I learned my lesson well.

If his work is published on line (or even if not) and you are following the guidelines for fair use there is no reason he could sue you.

As to the original story - worst case you made no impact on her - best case you planted a seed and she will consider your advice and it may just help her someday - at the very least you have no reason to feel anything but sadness if something should ever happen to her that just might not have happened had you not said anything.

A different town still

I've seen the weirdos where you go, I've been one of the weirdos where you go (Same room different town)

I'm sure we have some friends in common, notably Bill:)

And know similar weirdoes, not that I'm anywhere near normal.
