One should always have a gun on hand.

Killed many a rattler in my youth on the farm, mostly with a sharp grubbing hoe. They (and the water moccasins) came up from the creek to sun in the garden. Nasty suckers to plow into.

The wild hogs that run the area where the old family cemetery is are the reason I got my CC to begin with, as unlicensed carry of a pistol in that state became illegal. A hog got me on the leg. Lots of blood, but I got to my .357 and dropped him before he could hit me again. Pity the folks down the road heard shots "out of season" and called the Sheriff. Got patched up, but also admonished for illegal carry, as my implied right to carry died in some legislative abyss.

chaparrito, you are right about Guinea Hens and snakes! Boy that is something to watch. Sorry for the thread highjack. :o

On subject, one of the few times I had a rifle on me, because I was checking on the chickens (we had seen a coyote earlier.)and I heard leafs crunching, so I shined my flashlight towards the noise and there was a big doe 30yards away! as luck would have it it's illegal to hunt deer at night here.

those dirty rats and crawly things

And of course there was the time I flushed three killer rats from a tunnel at the chicken house with a water hose.

Luckily I had my S&W model 12 with six hand-loaded shot shells (7 1/2 shot) in my back pocket.

The wet rat was the last one to come out of the tunnel.

Then a couple of weeks ago I had my 642 loaded with shot shells and shot this copperhead. I unknowingly walked within 2.5' of it three times safely. On the fourth walk by I saw it was there coiled. It was in an outbuilding with a closed walk-thru door and a roll-up garage door.

I quickly made it around the corner and shot that bugger dead. I was happy to connect at forty yards with a compact gun.

How many shots did it take you? What kind of ammo were you using? Just curious. You "connected" but it wasn't a kill shot? Sounds as if you just wounded it and let it wander off to die.

I have not heard of a single problem with pets, small children, etc caused by the coyotes,

I'm in Colorado, coyotes here have been known to attack humans. Right now the resident pack does not consider sheep or me food but if that changes I will not hesitate to kill them. Bears OTOH are a different story. Bears now are running rampant, I figure that any one I see that is looking at me is threatening my life. They have already broken in to several houses locally, been seen at noon in downtown and have killed a lot of livestock. No food up high and way too many bears. Over 18,000 OTC bear tags left but the rules mean you can't hunt them unless you also have a deer or elk tag and none of those left. However, the game warden has said that if the bear is threatening me or livestock I can kill it w/o the tag, just can't save the meat, which seems a total waste.

You must live up there where they made that show called the
Last Frontier! We have a few black bears in the south but
ours are not that plentiful. Oh guess not I see your in Colorado.

I know people that hunt coyotes (by calling) for fun, and others than would like to see less coyotes due to loss of dogs cats chickens etc.. But personally I like coyotes, they're very adaptable and are out there just trying to eke out a living like the rest of us.

I think this young lady's family might have another opinion.

I agree....shot the animal for just being what it is, sad.

What it is is largely a carnivore, a predator, and at best a pest that kills livestock, and at worst, a distinct danger to humans.

I guess you allow the roaches, rats, and other vermin just run loose in your house? They're "just being what they are." :roll eyes:

Do you live in a part of the country that is affected by subterranean termites? Did you treat the soil, or do you have a pest control service that puts out baits to kill them? Sad. After all, they are just being what they are.

Maybe you were just joking or being ironic when you made such an inane statement. If so, I apologize for my own sarcasm.
