Is It Really Too Big?

Quick figuring....

where the heck do you find commercial ammo for $1.50 a pop? Most I see is double that! And yes, I definitely roll my own!

Just a quick figure and I'm not sure what type of ammo I based that on. The point is that it IS too expensive to buy unless you are very well off, and that it's better to reload for them.

I will say that if I lived (or went) in bear country, it's what I would carry.

(on a semi-related note, my sister who lives in rural Colorado, was baking an applesauce cake two days ago, and noticed a black bear on the porch outside her kitchen. It wandered off. The next thing she knew she heard a crash and the bear had come through her home office window into the house. She peeked around the corner, and when it saw her, it took off out the window. So - she's getting burglar bars!)

It would have to be a life or death situation before I would discharge my 500 without hearing protection. And I don't plan on putting myself in that
Situation If at all possible. There are too many other options available

The Colt Walker was made large because the steel wasnt as good in those days. The Walker was known to blow up cylinders. It was also meant for cavalry and may have been sized to kill a horse. The Dragoon was sized down for better handling. When steel got stronger, smaller sized 44 revolvers came out.

The 460 was designed for long range pistol hunting with light bullets. Meant for up to 200 yards with a scope.

The 500, well I might be happier with one walking around a lot of big bears if I couldnt carry a proper rifle.

If I have to take a few deep breaths and have a bag of ice handy for the big knot on my forehead, then I probably don't need a gun of that power.I'll stick to my smaller calibers and let the young guns play with the big stuff........wisdom and common sense has got me this far.

I saw a guy bench press a 500 three times and drop dead.

I bought an early production 8 3/8" 500 in '03, and a so-called 4" (actually it's a 3" with a 1" comp) in '05. I've shot, hunted with, hand loaded, and carried both guns pretty extensively. I don't CCW the 4", have never tried and think there are far better choices available for that, both in terms of caliber-choice for two-legged threats, and in terms of weight and compactness, but I do live in griz country and carry one or the other of them when I go huckelberry picking. I've shot deer with the 8 3/8" gun and it works well. I love both and have had a lot of fun shooting them over the past decade.

I bought the 8 3/8" one and the 4 inch also, didn't like the 4 incher so I traded it for a 6 1/2" model, I like it very much. Only had them a couple months but I hope to do some hunting with them this fall.. just got an elk tag last week.

I'd have to say that shooting the 4" is daunting. I consider it more my woods/carry gun when there is a possibility of running into a griz.....which is always at least remotely possible around here.

Interestingly, the recoil impulse feels milder in my hand with the 4" than it does with the 8 3/8", but the muzzle blast is way more obnoxious with the shorter gun. For a time they were selling a snubbie, I think it was under 3" and didn't have a comp on it. Ouch. I never fired one but can only imagine.

I may carry one in big bear country, but something smaller should take care of black bears.

True. I live in "big bear country" (NW Montana) and have lived here for most of my life......will be 65 in a month. I've been into the woods and backcountry thousands of times and, outside of Glacier National Park, have encountered a griz exactly once, and that was when I was 19 years old, so a long long time ago. So, while it is always a possibility, it really isn't very likely around here. Of course, there are areas where the odds go up or down. I tend to play those odds and carry the 500 when I go into the "up" areas, and something smaller in the "down" ones.

Plenty of stories of guys taking multiple shots of 12G, 45acp and even 30cal rifle rounds and keep going.

Multiple shots of 12 ga say slugs and .30 cal rifles?? Ah, must be superficial wounds. No one is going to take multiple 12 ga slugs and still be standing.
.30 cal rifles, must be clips with FMJ.

Just like the recent mess with Michael Brown in Ferguson, 4 hits on the arm, doesn’t stop a 290# pissed off guy. The shot to the head did though. Don
