Is It Really Too Big?

Other than for hunting or killing paper, yes it is too big. I do not hunt any more and I can kill paper with smaller, cheaper rounds. I think it is a visceral thing with many who own them. The recoil and concussion push the adrenaline button and maybe a touch of the Freudian thing as well. To each their own.

Visceral.... Adrenaline button........ Freudian thing?????

I just LOVE $5.00 words!!!!!! As you said: " To each their own"... Speaking for myself, your thinking does not apply as there is only one reason I risked the wrath of my wife and bought one of these Beasties: I, plain and simple, Like the gun!!

I liked the craftsmanship, engineering and stopping power that went into my Model 29 .44 I had back in the late '80s and when I went to buy a new gun this year I seriously considered a new M-29 but didn't buy one because the longest barrel available was the 6.5". So I researched the Model 500 and wound up getting one that has the 8-3/8" barrel because, for my purposes, that's the perfect size weapon and has the punch to bring down anything I need to just like the .44 mag was but it's a bit "stouter".

Visceral and Adrenaline button... If you're talking butterflies in my stomach the first time I shot her and the rush, you're absolutely correct!! Now though, it's merely a matter of operating the weapon to get used to her and make her and myself perform the way we need to although I STILL get a grin after I leave the range.... :D

So that leaves the "Freudian thing"....

Hmmmm.... "Freudian"....

Ah!! I know what you're referring to!! As I stated My 500 has an 8-3/8" barrel and that's about 4" to short to compensate for anything that the Good Lord blessed me with..... :D :D

Kidding aside, Thanks for the post as it got me thinking as to just why I bought the gun!! Answer: I bought it for me!!

Certainly too big when I had the guy next to me at the range, takes his loaded 500 mag to a table behind me,to show it off to his bud that had never been shooting before, handling it,holstering it,etc. I said something to the guy,but he was oblivious to what proper gun safety meant.
That was the final straw for me visiting that particular range. Why someone hasn't been killed there,is beyond me.
My fellow Long Islanders will reconize that I'm talking about the Calverton range.
