For the rest of September 10 shots from a 45 at 25 yards OFF HAND.

Any 45 caliber semiauto or revolver.

Please show picture of gun, target and a ruler.

Smallest group wins.

We can refine this as we go.

It does not have to be a Smith to enter.
Enter as many times as you want with what ever 45 you have.

The match rules will be posted on the first of the month just like the Snubby match.

Prize will be 25 targets custom made for this match.

I am an old bullseye shooter, this should be fun.

Heading to the range now.

Auto Ordinance purchased for $300 in the mid to late 80s. It now has a wilsons match grade barrel and shoots better than I can. Commerical cast 200 swc 5.0 Promo (red dot) 929 fps.

I need practice.

David, I post this only for the smile, as these rules aren't followed. I'm new to owning a semi auto- this is my first, and this Colt is 400 or so rounds into being brand-new out of the box.

Also- from a indoor range, 17 yards is as far back as I can get. And the paper from that distance was so bad, I didn't want to post it. So here's my less-than-stellar 7 rounds at 10 yards.

This hip cannon is all new to me. I haven't been shooting all that long, and its all been with revolvers. So becoming accustomed to a stiffer trigger pull, having a slide fly back at your nose, and having brass flying everywhere in the range box is new.

Hoping to get used to these as well as to figure out the sights on this thing. I'll try again soon, and see what further 17 yard results bring.

I am a little behind. 4" takes the match for september.

For October, one hand 10 yards. 10 shots. ANY 45.

I am going to use my officers model.

Just for grins & giggles I think I'll drag out my Norwegian Colt. Also, is it kosher to shoot both cylinders in my Ruger convertible? I'm curious about how the 45 Colt will compare to the 45 ACP.

Yes please shoot both cylinders. That is why I said 45 cal , not 45 auto. I was hoping a bunch of model 25 would show up for the match.

I am an old bullseye shooter . GAME ON!

Placeholder for OCT - thanks!

Committing to memory: 10 rounds - 10 yards - 45 cal - one hand - awfulhand

Mantra: aim small, miss small

OK...

Did 2 targets today with number 1 measuring 3" and number 2 measuring 3.5" on a cold, windy day.
I fired from a Bullseye stance, just for fun, which I don't often do at the range.
Enjoy and here's hoping for many more entries this month.

I just saw your post. It shouldn't take you much, if any, longer to get used to the Colt. A long time ago, I used to think, "How can anyone shoot this thing?" After the rounded grip frames of Smiths and Ruger single-actions, it felt like a brick in my hand...all those straight lines and corners, you know? But I soon learned the right way to hold it, and the non-adjustable sights work just fine for my purposes. The Colt 1911 platform is the genetic ancestor of every clone and copycat in today's market.

I'm actually a little surprised to read about the "stiffer trigger pull", because my Colt Series 70 Mark IV has the best out-of-the-box trigger pull of any semi-auto I've ever fired.

And don't fall for all that malarkey about how you have to send it off for a trigger job and "tightening up the action" before it'll be any good. It's a fine weapon just as it comes from the factory, and a whole lot of fun to shoot. Save that money you'd spend on "customizing" it and put it towards another Colt 1911.

I'm genuinely curious...what differentiates a match grade barrel, say one made by Wilson, from the factory barrel? I've heard people talk about match grade barrels and bushings and what all, but never really researched the topic.

I've always like the looks (except for the cheesy looking "U.S." stocks) of Auto Ordnance's plain vanilla Parkerized 1911, but the funny thing is, you absolutely cannot find one at any shop around here. Not one. No one stocks Auto Ordnance stuff. I've never even seen a used one. I think Rock Island has almost run them out of the market.

Match grade parts are "too big" to drop in and work. The parts have to be tweaked, filed, machined, blessed with holy oil, and behold the part fits. If you use a Ransome rest, the gun was built right, and the ammo is 'tuned' for the gun, you get a large 1-1/2" diameter hole torn in the paper at 50 yards with no flyers.

I have two of those mystical 1911s that shoot groups 1/3 to 1/8 the size I can. At this point in my life, pride of ownership is good for me. Sometimes I have one of those "How did I do that?" targets, and the next one will be shot in 7 weeks -- dots of perfection in sea of ineptitude, and I'm having fun.

Match barrels are fitted to the gun. That is the third barrel in that gun, the second one had a junk chamber I could load the bullets as long as i wanted and they would still chamber and fire.

The gun was originally parkerized, cheap finish of flat black. I had it blued quite a few years ago. I shot a lot of bullseye with that gun. It was more accurate than my friends new series 80 gold cup. It will do 1" at 25 and 2" at 50 yards with a 200 swc and 3.5 bullseye. It will feed a magazine of empty cases. There are many faults with it. The rear sight is not exactly level and the front sight came off a couple times so I tig welded it on. I bought that gun around 1987. Quality of all guns was not so good at the time this one was no exception. I knew I was going to rebuild it when I bought it so a frame and slide are what I was looking for. The first thing I did was a trigger job.

I bought auto ordinance because it was the cheapest 45 I could find at the time.

TenTea, beautiful model 25.

Thanks, David.

It be a 1955 Target Model (technically pre-25).

I had been researching and lusting after a Model 25-2 for about a year, when I found this gun, languishing unloved in GA. It has a *W* mainspring and I've been shooting it weekly+ this year...just not too often in Bullseye stance. ;)
