Scotch Drinkers

J&B is a good all around bar drink.
Single malts are my favorite--depending on the mood.
If you offer me scotch I don't ask what kind.
I also like burbons.
I will rarely drink anything except over ice---maybe a water backer--though scotch and soda are not bad--especially when you have a cold.
Other than that--I don't drink as I am a Baptist.

I was gifted a bottle of Balvenie DoubleWood 12 at my retirement party, and I'm learning to appreciate it ;)
 
I am an Islay Single Malt fan - Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Caol Isla.

Johnnie Walker is a blend - could change components every year to make it taste the same.

The risk with all single malts, especially single barrel, is that they change as a new barrel comes along (think single barrel Jack Daniels as a comparison - many are great but there is the random one that just downright needed to be thrown away).

I've grown to love some that can't be bought anymore -

Friends tell me that 4 roses single barrel is very good.
 
I am a Dewers white label fan for my daily evening drink. But when I want to treat myself I keep a selection of Single Malts. I don't think I have ever drank any Islay Malts I didn't like, regardless of the maker. Lagavulin is the one all others are measured against, (it aught to be, at nearly $100 a 5th). But at a "tasting" at the Liquor store last week I found Bunnahabhain, also an Islay malt, but very smooth and muted peat flavors. Very nice. I took a bottle home to add to my collection. One real "sleeper" if you have a Trader Joe's store in your vicinity try the "Islay Storm", it's only $21.50 which for a Single Malt is cheap, and it rates up there with $50 Malt's.

Now if you Really want to try something special, try the MACALLAN Cask Strength, single malt.. Aged in Sherry Oak Casks and bottled at original cask strength.:eek:
58.6 % Alc..Vol>>> 117.2 PROOF.. smooooth:D It explodes in your mouth.. Truly a sipping Scotch.. :D:D

HUGE fan of Single Malts here! Had the pleasure of attending a mass tasting in Chicago years ago and got to sample Glenlivet 30 yr. Smoother than a baby's' backside!

Some others to try:

Balvenie Doublwood
Dalhmore Cigar Malt Reserve.
Glenmorangie Sherry Cask
 
For a cold day

On one of those cold wet days where your hands feel like talons try a mix of two shots Drambuie and one shot of Laphroaig its about warmth not taste as Ralphie says.
 
I'm a rum person myself. But my son in law likes Scotch and asked for a bottle of Yamasaki, Yamaguchi, Kawasaki or something like that. It is a Japanese scotch. I had to drive to the next state to buy it for him. $55 a bottle. He said it was one of the best 5 Scotches he had ever had. He normally drinks various single malts.

I'm trying to envision what peaty tastes like. Crumbly soggy dirt??
 
I love scotch, especially the peaty smoky Isle scotch.....but it doesn't love me back :(.

Every time I have even a little I get heartburn and usually followed by a headache

Lol! That Japanese scotch is good.

Peaty tastes a little smoky and salty but not like it had salt added, more iodine like. It's good!
 
I could never acquire the taste for scotch, but love a good bourbon on the rocks. Since my surname is Middleton, I have wanted to try Midleton Irish Whiskey, but the $150 per bottle has kept me away. That could be down payment on nice S&W revolver and the enjoyment would last longer.

I too love a good Irish Whiskey and Middleton is very pricy. May I suggest you try an often overlooked Irish that is amazing at about $40/$45 a bottle.

My favorite scotch is whatever you are buying. my pal Petey likes 'em peaty, so I've put down a lot of the Glenmorangies. If I'm buying for home use, two words: Bowmore.

I really prefer rye whisky: Overholt for everyday over store ice, Templeton, or in a pinch, Bulleit for sippin'. Tullamore for sippin' Irish. I don't like vodka, but somehow I always manage to have some Russkiy Standart in my freezer. Frozen is the only way I'll drink it; there is no such thing as a vodka martini. A Martini is a gin drink.
 
Should try the smallest distillery in Scotland. Edradour. Literally three men and a dog. Just up the road from Pitlochry on the Highland Line. Found it many years ago and it is sublime. No water or ice in it. A little drop of water afterwards is permissible. Dave_n
