Got into an argument with an acquaintance of mine tonight that I probably should have avoided.

Apparently my buddy was in a fast food restaurant today and noticed another patron carrying a gun. I didn't hear the whole story but the buddy says the guy was sitting at the table with the gun in his pocket and the butt or part of the butt sticking out. The buddy tells us that he knew the guy was carrying an illegally concealed weapon and that's where the argument started.

I pointed out to this guy that if he could see the butt of the gun then it (by definition) wasn't concealed. He goes off on some rant that the law stipulates that the weapon must be fully visible.

The law stipulates no such thing, CRS 18-12-105 says a person commits a class 2 misdemeanor if such person knowingly and unlawfully: Carries a firearm concealed on or about his or her person COCODE.

The buddy went up to the manager and raised hell and demanded that she cal the police. Then he "surveilled" the guy until he left the restaurant.

A couple months back this guy got all hot and bothered because someone brought his kids to church in car with out child safety seats.

Ok I get it, not having safety seats is bad but this clown was about to go out and put a "Citizen's arrest" on the guy.

I'm not the only one that notices the problem because someone else was asking him tonight how he always seems to be around when these situations arise. I didn't hear his answer.

It seems that there is a certain type of citizen permit holder that sees the permit as some kind of junior auxiliary police badge. I actually read a thread on THR years ago where the poster said that having a permit made us defacto law enforcement officers.

I'm sorry but people like that annoy me I don't know that it actually is the permit that makes him such a busybody or he just happens to be a busybody who got a CHP but I ma certain one day he going to bite off far more than he can chew and either get himself killed or sued

Personally, I find that "minding my own business" is a pretty good way to go through life. A friend of mine once said that you can dramatically increase your chances of going through life without having to shoot someone if you stay away from places where there is alcohol, drugs, loose women, especially loose women who are consuming intoxicants or drugs, and if you stay away from bad parts of the city or known bad locations, and if you "mind your own business."

My addition to that is that I have found it easy to not get shot by a police officer. All you have to do is to refrain from attacking them, attempting to grab their weapon or trying to kill or hurt them. Oh, and politely follow their instructions. Apparently, there are those in various places who have not learned or been taught this simple lesson.

Killed, sued or arrested. Maybe arrested and sued. Or maybe just royally beaten up.

That mentality worries me a lot. It reflects a serious lack of mature judgment and understanding of the responsibility involved in being licensed to carry a gun.

Unless circumstances dictate otherwise (e.g., you work or otherwise have to interact with him), steer clear of this guy. You may wind up being a collateral victim the next time someone objects to one of his rants.

Also, he sees someone with a gun, convinced it is illegal, and demands the restaurant worker (who likely saw nothing of the sort) call the police?! What about using his own phone...or 'better' still, angrily confronting the man himself? Sounds like the outrage stopped when he had to get personally involved (dialing 911, buying a car seat for the parents who likely can't afford one...).

Stay far, far away.

I worked with allot of people like this in South Florida twenty plus years ago as a Security Guard. Couldn't wait till the end of my shift and prayed my relief didn't call off. Got to work with some good Guys that retired from Fire and Police Depts. in NY/NJ/CT/MA. Reminds me of that line Tommy Lee Jones said in the opening Monologue in No Country for Old Men. "Always liked to hear about the Old Timers and their Stories... Never missed a chance to do so."

I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY CLEAR OF THIS GUY, AND NOT ENCOURAGE HIS FRIENDSHIP. HIS LACK OF MATURITY AND HABIT OF STICKING HIS NOSE IN MATTERS THAT DON'T CONCEN HIM WILL EVENTUALLY BRING HIM SOME DIRE CONSEQUENCES. IT IS THESE CONSEQUENCES THAT YOU SHOULD AVOID BEING INVOLVED IN. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU DON'T WANT TO BE AROUND HIM WHEN THE SHTF…….

He is mentally unstable and needs counseling and probably medication.

Stay away and ask someone to have a quiet word with him.

my CWP allows me one thing, to carry a concealed weapon. the only time you are supposed to get involved down my way is a forceable felony. end of policing...

There's a guy who desperately needs to have his permit shredded with great prejudice.

I know the type you describe and I too would stay clear of the guy. Some people just can't stay out of other people's business for some reason. I worked with a guy like that and he was a nightmare as he also lied and told my boss all sorts of tales about me. I had to have daily contact with the guy and fortunately got reassigned and didn't have to deal with him any longer.

I mean no offense by this, okay? After reading over your comments a few times, I've come to the conclusion that your acquaintance is the thing or person you should avoid.

As you say, one of these days he's gonna bite off more than he can chew, and if you're hanging around with him when it happens, you could get dragged into it, too. Situations like that don't usually have a good ending.

This person is your friend why?

I try my best to live my life by two simple principals:
- I don't deal with drama, of any sort, period.
- I don't deal with stupid people, period.

If I am dealing with someone stupid, I remove myself from the situation, period.

Ditch this guy, he's bad luck.

I also enjoyed reading some other thoughts and observations as well.

Totally agreed that having a permit does NOT make you a de facto Police Officer. Quite the opposite. You are entrusted to carry a lethal weapon by the state, you will be held to a higher standard of care. You do not have a badge, or an S on your chest.

The best advice I ever got when I first got my permit was to make sure no one would ever know you were ever carrying. Don't talk about guns if you are carrying, cover up fully, and only take it out if it has to get fired, I.e. There is imminent danger to life and limb. The words he used were, if it comes out, it has to go bang, or you will have some serious explaining to do. What he was really getting at, is you must show the utmost restraint. I have never had to present any of my weapons, let alone discharge one, and I hope I never have to. I have slightly modified the original advice to, only draw your weapon, if it is in a situation where it absolutely has to be used.

Totally agreed with several posters that this person is to be avoided.

A few folks mentioned that as a citizen, the best way to avoid trouble is to not frequent known troubled areas. Totally agreed there.
