Model 41 Barrel Rib Question

I was looking at a mid-1970's A Prefix Model 41 with the 7 3/8" barrel and noticed that the rib was checkered like a Model 27. Would a 5 1/2" Heavy Barrel of the same time period also have the checkered rib and does anyone know when they went to standard serrations on the rib ?

Thanks for the confidence however I don't have a model 27, so cannot compare the checkering. I will say the 7 3/8" barrels are checkered and different to the heavy barrel. Also the Extendable front sight barrel top is smooth. I don't know of any changes and will be keen if someone has other information.

My 1973 vintage 5.5" is grooved - not checkered

The 7 3/8" barrels had checkered ribs as did the 5" Field barrels, I believe. As shown below, the 5.5" Heavy barrel is grooved and the 5.5" EFS is smooth.

I found a photo on one of the auction sites of an early 5.5" heavy barrel and it did have the checkered rib. It did not have the A-prefix serial #so it was prior to 1970. SCEVA's photo about shows a 1973 vintage 5.5" barrel with serrations, so maybe around the time they went to the A-prefix serial #'s they dropped the checkering, at least on the 5.5" barrels which seem to have been the most popular length ?

I think you will find that the 5 1/2" you saw was the field barrel as they are checkered same as the 7 3/8" barrels. The 5 1/2 HB are like the ones Civil1977 shows in post #5.
Or you may have been mislead by the pictures, some of the pictured I looked at you could think were checkered when in fact they are grooved.

I could not find it, can you please have another look and post a link once the auction has ended if it is in fact a 5 1/2HB with checkering.

I do not have a model 41 from 1967 closest is 1969 and it is checkered.
Could you post some pictures of your barrel, thanks.

That's checkering on your barrel rib. It may be hard to see in my pictures above, but the 5.5" barrels have straight grooves with no cross cuts.

Thank you for the information gentlemen. Being a model 41 owner since 02-13-2015 and it being the only one I have seen in person and held. I got a lot to learn. When I think of checkering I think of the grips. Scott

Yes sir this is my first. I did a great deal of homework before making the decision to find a pre "A" prefix serial numbered model 41. It took me the better part of a year to find one of the age and price that worked for me. Holding it taking it apart looking at it. All I can really say is it's a work of art, the fit and finish just blows me away. I am truly in LOVE. Scott

You have one of the finest guns ever made as we all on here know. It should last you a lifetime if you look after it properly. These guns will take a ton of abuse and wear. Its extremely rare to wear a barrel out on them it seems as well. I have a 1958 which I was firing earlier to-day and its just as accurate as the day it was built. I wish I was as good as it is.

Interesting . . . My 41 is s/n 947XX. It has a 7 3/8" barrel with a checkered rib. It has a lazy ampersand. The 5" field barrel purchased with it isn't checkered, but grooved. The field barrel has a "hard working" (as in non-lazy) ampersand.
