BEST Concealed Carry Revolver

I would love the 640 but it's a little too much for pocket carry. The 340 and 340PD seemed like they would be brutal with 357 mags so for the money, I chose the 442 Pro Moon Clip. Great for pocket carry and about 1/2 the price of the 340 duo. If money is no object, I'd go the 340 route.

I have a 340PD. The first four rounds are .38 special and the last round is .357.

Why? Because they work, and work very well. With the mid-range Golden Saber ammo I use the gun is light weight, accurate and easy to control.

I prefer 3" carry guns.... 65 or 66 even a 60-10 and I'm GTG

I magna-ported...... a 3" 65 back in the 80s....... couldn't tell the difference with +P .38s and with .357s felt I was just getting more flash and bang..... LOL maybe I just didn't have "enough" ports!!!!

Remember seeing one or two of those 13s years ago and loved everything except the porting.....

Glad it's working for you!!

I see we share a fondness for Spegel grips.

I like the 640..not too bulky or heavy, and it is very comfortable to carry when using the DeSantis IWB. I use the pocket holster when wearing a coat or cargo shorts.

I have the 640 Pro (better sights and moon clips). I agree it carries on the belt comfortably. I think it is too heavy for carrying in a pocket however.

Best Carry Revolver???

I suppose the best carry revolver is the one you have on you when you need it. That said, I have carried .38, .357, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, .45 APC and .45 Colt revolvers at one time or the other.

I find that when I decide to carry a revolver (most of the time I carry a semi auto) these days this is the one I reach for:

Model 696.

With the three inch barrel and round butt it carries well. The full underlug gives it the weight to tame recoil, which is quite manageable as it is. And the .44 special bullet, while moving slowly, makes a big hole. I carry it as a backup while deer hunting and when on my farm.

Maybe not the best but my favorite...642-1 with Herrett's Shooting Ace grips and Wild Bill's horsehide pocket holster.

Usually, when quoting, I remove the pix, but not here. Just adore pix of 2" carry guns in either IWB or pocket rigs. Rarely do we see Herrett's grips on the Forum. Wonder why? Too expensive perhaps? The Shooting Ace grips are flat and work well on a snub.

The Herrett's grips pictured here do not fill in any of the space behind the trigger guard, and for that reason, are not suitable for many people, including yours truly.

The best ccw for me??? My Ruger Alaskan 454 is my personal favorite ccw. I still use the 640 & 642 when needing a pocket pal. Just gave my wife the 442. But the Alaskan is a stout gun and have a nice IWB that keeps it up and tight.
And yes I'm a large man (6'4 & 342lbs)

Best conceal carry revolver? It depends. When I carry one it is usually a 442 or 60 in a pocket as a BUG to a Glock 22. If I want a revolver for waist carry, my 4" M10 or 4" GP-100 .38 come out of the safe. The M10 is a standard barrel round butt version which works great IWB in an old Bianchi #6 suede clip holster when I wear a tuxedo for performing.

That is a nice one.
I have always liked the "idea" of the 696. But, I've never owned one. I should just take the plunge someday.

But you sure can use them with a Tyler T-grip with no problem...if you like that option of course.

Grips and holsters are a very personal thing; see picture for how I roll. Getting back to the thread topic, for me, the best concealed carry revolver is a super light 340 with Crimson Trace Laser Grips in a DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster.

Options are available to address that. Tyler T-grips (if you like them) work fine with the Shooting Ace stocks.

Sometimes I carry this 629-5...not often.

It's heresy perhaps, but my other carry revolver is a 3" SP101.

I'll carry .38 +P in my 2.125" Model 60, but in the SP101 I'll carry .357 magnum. It has just enough extra weight to make the .357 readily manageable and the 3" barrel takes away some of the velocity hit you get with the .357 Magnum in a 2.125" barrel.

The downside side is that while the extra barrel length is not an issue, the SP101 is just enough heavier to be noticeable in all day carry where the Model 60 is not.

----

Magna porting might make sense in practical pistol competition where speed and accuracy are at a premium because:

a) no one is trying to take your pistol or revolver away from you;

b) the additional muzzle flash in low light condition is not an issue; and

c) the additional muzzle blast directed back toward you in an enclosed space is not a concern.

I am however not a fan of magna porting on a self defense pistol or revolver as porting creates some serious problems shooting from a close in retention position, and the additional flash and blast create greater disadvantages in real world shooting situations.

The king daddy of all J Frames. The expensive, exotic material'd, gorgeous and arguably the strongest production power to weight ratio firearm available.
