Victim Tried to Defend Himself and Gun Jammed

Good post, JBSR.

Not knowing anything about this situation, I'd ask the question of whether folks who knew what these folks were up against, had tried to get these folks out of town until they had to testify, and again forgive me if I'm assuming too much.

The situation was a little unusual. The robbery was in Charlotte. The Londons lived on the back side of Lake Wylie, in South Carolina, so different law enforcement jurisdictions were involved. That may be why the FBI took over AFTER the murders.

I found some contemporary news items on the murders. According to the son, the Londons knew they were in danger.

Suspected robber fatally shot (by store owner) in Mesa (AZ)

Happened 10 hrs ago, but what the article doesn't say is that the store owners gun was a Kel-Tec 9mm that jammed after 1 round. He struck the male but didn't fatally wound him. The owner then wrestled the gun away from the male perp & finished him off with the perps own gun. He then shot the woman who was also armed.

She was later charged with homicide under the 'felony murder rule'. We coppers were privately congratulating him for his actions. That's two less ***'s to deal with.

I never had much faith in Kel-Tec but this proved it.

After thinking about this discussion about survival techniques I was looking at "Caught on Camera" today and saw a most incredible shootout recorded by Police dash cam.

You folks must see this, it's amazing! I believe the officers names are Aaron Thomas and Brendan Savage. They pull over vehicle and man jumps out with AK-47 and starts firing at the officers immediately. Incredible number of shots both ways, incredible struggle to survive.

I hope this connects the link, if not, please copy and paste

I hope you folks can get to this

This has to go thru your mind every time you pull someone over - - - So far it has not happened to me but the next stop might be the one!

I sincerely hope not. "Death by cop" is a terrible thing to have to live with in your every day job.

I was a football official. It was our prayer before every game that we wouldn't have to throw a flag. It never happened, but we still wanted it. I hope the same for policemen. Alas, too many selfish people for them not to break the law.

While in the USMC I shot and killed an escaping prisoner in June 1969 - - - All in the fulfilling of my duties but I still think of him. I hope when they put me in the ground my last kill was still 1969 but I still am prepared everyday!

I admit, I assumed a stovepipe in this situation like so many others. After re-reading the FBI affidavit though, all it says is that a malfunction "caused the spent casing to remain in the gun", which could as easily be in the chamber due to a broken extractor or a bulged case as a stovepipe.

This, of course, changes nothing so far as the need to purchase quality firearms, maintain them properly, practice, purchase good quality defensive ammo, practice, have a plan for equipment failure and then practice.

Prayer would not be out of order, either, even if not accompanied by spraying.

Both of my girls shoot. When they decided that they wanted to compete with us (USPSA) they started with my match fit Springfield 1911 9mm. I start them with this gun for a couple of reasons.. One it is accurate as all get out. #2. It does not like to be limp wristed. So they get lots of practice clearing jams. It is now to the point, that if they get a jam, they don't even think about it, they just clear it.

Sad to hear about good people doing the right thing and bad guys making them paying for that choice. As to home protection.. Our house is split level, so basically we have 5 floors.. The youngest is on the top floor, she has a rifle. We are on the 4th floor, two handguns in a safe and the eldest on the second floor and she has a handgun and an AR. We all are comfortable with our guns. We also have a security system and dogs. We have been robbed (before the security system). Luckily no one was home at the time. If you have guns in the house for protection, you need to know how to use them. You need to practice the standard two handed grip, strong hand and weak hand. You need to feel comfortable handling your gun. You never know what is going to happen and or where it is going to happen. Be prepared.
