45 shot in Chigago over 4th weekend

Just like how cocaine and heroin are illegal in all states, and now we can't get any and you never seen any on the streets? Oh, wait....

There are more guns in Wyoming than Chicago. Yet no slew of shootings here. Maybe it is something other than guns at work.

I may have failed to clearly make my point. CHICAGO'S GUN CONTROL STRATEGY WILL NEVER WORK !!!

Better?

It's either idiocy or insanity to think that a banning of an easily-transportible and concealeable item will have any tangible effect on its importation.

Please re-read my post where I note the problem of embedded gang culture. When even some of the cops are 'former' gang members, what can you expect?

Ignoring, or childishly mocking the immense problem of straw purchases is also non-productive.

Even with all of these 'issues,' I feel safer in Chicago than in most cities.

The father of the seven year old kid is reported to be a "ranking" gang member having been arrested 45 times!!!

If known gang member are allowed to run amok after the police have arrested them FORTY FIVE times... then just forget about it. The bad guys have won unless or until the good people in these sanctioned areas of terror rise up and take matters into their own hands.

National news quoted Mayor Rahm Emanuel as saying "WE NEED STRICTER GUN LAWS" What don't he understand, the law abiding gun owners are not the people he should be targeting!

News also reports that they were much better off than Last Fourth of July, when 82 people were shot, 16 of them fatally, over 84 hours.

I remember seeing something on TV a few years ago about Chicago gangs. I don't remember the exact number of different named gangs which have been identified there, but close to 100. How can the police possibly exercise any control over a hundred gangs? Probably best to just hang back and let them kill each other.

The line of thinking is to blame everyone not in Chicago. Straw purchases and such.

Therefore stricter national gun restrictions are needed.

The big picture, and it gets worse but I won't try to solve our country's problems because I like to hang around here.

I've got a solution. It's based on this movie I saw the other night with Kurt Russell. It was called "Escape from New York". They just sealed off the city and called it a maximum security prison!

But you knew that ;)

And getting us back on topic (S&W revolvers), it featured a scoped 67(-2?). Of course it didn't hold up as well as Adrienne Barbeau's bazongas against that Cadillac with the chandelier headlights. Anyhoo, that's how I picture Chicago.

An excellent suggestion in its purest sense, yet there will always be collateral damage along the way. At what point do we accept the aforementioned, as a side effect of the solution?

Now if we could fence off 5 or 10 acres of Montana or Wyoming, for a short time, place all the thugs in this area with equal weapons and ammo then let nature take it course. May the best thug win.

Are there any hard numbers, not from gun control advocacy groups, as to the exact numbers involved in straw purchases?

That's where they tore down the bridges to Long Island and put all the graft there to kill themselves, and the Presidents helo crashes or something there ??

Cook County Illinois (Chicago) had 45 people shot over the 4th weekend, how's that gun control working in Chicago?

Well that is one way to celebrate the 4th! Most people just use fireworks or fire guns into the ground. Actually shooting people is going a little too far as a celebration in my opinion.

The acronym that comes to mind is "RICO". Don't know if there's the money, personnel or will to apply it; but something has to found to at least weaken the gangs' command structure.

I'm just afraid that Chicago is one of the cities where the gangs are too entrenched and the gang culture too pervasive for much success in trying to control them.

The father of the little boy who was killed apparently was the real target. He had been arrested many times, and was walking free. He should have been in prison for a very long time. But when the gangs threaten the lives and families of witnesses if they testify against these vicious criminals, building a case can be nearly impossible.

Yes, the system is broken. But how to fix it?

EDITED TO ADD: More gun control damn sure isn't the answer.

It's not working anywhere. I'd be intrigued to hear from some of our forum members from outside the U.S. on this topic. The strict gun laws in the U.K. haven't eliminated crime:

These are both well worth watching despite the obvious gun bias.

The root on the problem.

Correct.

Staying on topic; Would this work for Chicago? With that giant lake nearby?

45 shot is not accurate.
as a bedtime routine I follow tweets from people listening to scanners in various cities ... Chicago, Detroit, Omaha and a few others.

before I went to sleep, Chicago was at 62 shot.

45 is abhorrent enough for pushing gun control but the 62+ will refute the mayors claim that crime is down due to his efforts.

The bad guys have won unless or until the good people in these sanctioned areas of terror rise up and take matters into their own hands.

Actually, the court case in the 7th Circuit that struck down the Illinois concealed carry prohibition said that people in the gang and crime ridden areas of Chicago had much more need for concealed carry permits than the people living in high rises on the Gold Coast.

THEY GOT IT SOLVED..........

According to residents in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, three signs created by locals are to be credited for a decrease in shootings in the area. The message on the signs: "Don't Shoot Kids At Play."

"The sign is helping," resident Kaliah Larry explains to CBS Chicago. "It's putting a message out there: if ya'll don't stop shooting now, how these kids gonna grow up?" The message was reportedly posted as a plea to local street gangs.

"Police like the signs and they give the community a lot of credit for helping reduce the number of shootings in the neighborhood.
"In addition to the signs, they applaud the mothers and fathers who walked the streets last weekend, talking to teens asking them to put down their guns and let the children grow up." Police have also increased patrols in the area.

There were no shootings in the neighborhood this year on the Fourth of July, compared to last year when there were more than a dozen shootings in the area.

"I was so happy to wake up the next morning and hear that in Englewood no one had gotten shot and killed," resident Yvonne Marshall tells CBS Chicago.
