Walmart to stop selling AR style rifles?

Forgot to mention, two of the Wms I go into from time to time here--have ARs available. I havent heard or seen anything indicating they will no longer sell--or stay open? However, ill bet the decision to no longer stay open all day--rests with Amazon.

I stopped in my local walmart this morning on my way to the rifle range. All of the AR's had clearance tags and were marked down. In talking to the department manager it appears that AR's will no longer be a stocked item but they are expanding in other guns (such as the 10/22 take-down). The Colt 6920LE with magpul furniture was marked down from $1167 to $899. I took it home with me.

At one time Sears Roebuck stocked both guns and ammunition, and some stores had very respectible gun departments. For that matter, so did Montgomery Ward (remember them?). Within about 5 years after the JFK assassination, they were pretty well out of the gun business. I was living in Western Maryland in the later 1960s, and I remember the local Sears store having a close-out sale on all their guns and ammo in stock. I bought quite a bit of .22 and 12 gauge ammo at about half-price then. Same could easily happen at Wal-Mart.

Heck, my local Walmart store doesn't even carry BB or airsoft guns. :( Next, I think they're going to move against those evil Nerf guns.

I think the "Location" tag top right of your post explains everything.;)
I think it's a local manager thang... or maybe a town thang? The Walmart in question is actually one of the better ones around in terms of stocking ammo. Go figure? ;)

Other Walmarts in MA *do* carry BB guns and airsoft guns... very confusing (even to the Walmart workers).

I know our local Wal Marts last week started clearing out all AR's and "tactical" shotguns and scopes. As it happened in all three of the closest locations covering three counties I wonder if the decision is on a local managerial or some type of regional level.

They opened a Walmart down the street from me next to Cabelas. It' been open couple months and it's a gigantic super Walmart second only in size in the chain to one in California. It originally opened as a 24hr store. Recently they changed hours to 0600 - 2400. I read an article saying that store sales from 2400-0600 couldn't justify the fact that shelves weren't being restocked fast enough to suit customers, so the night crew restocks instead of selling now. They sell limited ammo and no firearms. I attribute that to the fact we're close to Illinois. Another store is about 10 miles south and sells firearms. Walmart is not presenting much pricing competition to existing groceries here. Gun counter guys at Cabelas are complaining about guys dropping their woman off at WM then crowding the Cabelas gun counter with no ability to buy.

Was at my preferred WM (where I know the managers) for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Manager says yes, WM is clearance-pricing all AR & home defense shotguns, and will discontinue carrying them at all stores. There were some absurdly low prices on some.

I went into three Wal-Marts around Charleston and Summerville SC this past weekend. All AR type rifles were marked down, I was told the company would no longer carry this sort of thing. There was a Sig for $699.99 and a Bushmaster for $749.99 at the last store I went to.

Dang! :o Is there a really good buy I am missing here?

I'd have to go up deep into NH since they haven't sold guns here in MA practically forever.

Is it worth me taking a road trip today???

Not sure what guns my WM sells, not into new stuff myself but they do get in lots of ammo. Like others mentioned as soon as ammo comes in the desired ones get sold out within the hour... They have even put a limit on how many .22's you can buy at once but they are still gone as soon as they come in.

It may be, depending on which make and model rifle you want and if that particular one was in stock. I would of bought both of the rifles I saw at the last WM, had my wife not been standing next to me.

I did buy a used but pactically new looking S&W M&Pc .357 Sig out of a shop near Columbia, SC and had them ship it home. I hope it comes in tomorrow.

I wonder if I can find out on-line what's up there on clearance and what it would cost? And if they will sell to a Massachusetts resident?

Time to go do some research I guess. :)

It is legal to buy long guns from border states. I have purchased rifles and shotguns from AL, FL, TN, NC, and SC in the last four years and carried them out the door.
Understood. That's not our problem here in MA. Some border state stores have policies against selling any firearms to Massachusetts residents. If I recall correctly, that included some Southern NH Walmart stores. :o

Anyway, I can't get any info on-line... so I'm gonna pass. :o

You are a lucky guy. I never meet the man. I did read the book "Sam Walton, Made in America". I felt that he was an honest man that had small town values.

I bought WalMart stock around the time of his death (1992, blood cancer). I paid $9/ share. The company revenue was $50B (now $487B). I bought some more as I could. The stock trades for $71/ share now (plus dividends).

I honestly believe our country could use more Sam Walton's.

The new CEO has a philosophy called EDLP (every day low prices). He increased internet inventory by 60% and promises 10 million items by the end of this year. OK, I am a nerd that reads annual statements. :D

Guns: I believe they study store sales daily. They know what is selling and what isn't. They may be adjusting inventory to what is moving out the door.

Ammo: They would love to stock a full ammo cabinet. My sales associate tells me that she has ten people waiting in line when she stocks. I assume most flip of them at gun shows.

I first met him when WM came to my old hometown back about thirty five years ago. It was the ""happening""place in town to go to. He stood in the doorway for hours--personaly greeting every person who stepped through the door.

Next time I met him was in Corpus--at the store that used to be at Everhart and SPID. I didnt recognise hiat the time--being somefifeteen years later, and I as in the Automotive section looking for a car jackand tire iron.Well, the dept with lawnmowers was right there as well.A customer wanted the floor model ,but salesperson said he couldnt sell it and the customer had to wait till they got more in. Well,I was nearby, and heard the full exchange. An older guy said--you WILL sell that mower----if you value your job?. It was then I recognized that he was Mr.Walton himself. Also, the customer got that mower for next to nothing--for his "inconvience." I THINK he paid twenty dollars on amower that was for sale at about one fifty??

WM took a loss,in order to keep a loyal customer. Now since Mr. Walton passed away, almost everything is made in china--instead of here--and nothing of good quality. Also, they dont care for the individual customer-like they had to when he was living. Since his kids took over the company--its gone wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down hill in every aspect.

Oh and did I mention--that Mr.Walton hired me on the spot--back when the store opened in my hometown. I worked weekends only--part time-since I was in highschool.

I remember when Western Auto, Winns and Woolworths also sold guns and ammo.:(
