To what extent do you eat Hormel's canned meat product, Spam?

I like the 25% lower salt version and tried the Teriyaki version. Pretty good, but the skillet was hard to clean of the black cooking residue. I gather that in Hawaii and on Guam, they get a variety of flavorings. Spam is very popular there.

Years ago, a Spam can of the smoke-flavored product featured a Randall Model 3 knife on the can. I investigated, with both Hormel and Randall Made Knives giving me enough info to publish an article on it. That ran in, "Knife World".
If anyone is really interested, I'll summarize that article.

I need to see when Spam originated. I know it was used a lot to feed US troops in WW II and later.

Because of the salt and preservatives in it, I'm reluctant to eat much Spam. But it's good with Grey Poupon's Country Dijon mustard and with the sauce from Ranch Style beans.
And it's cost effective, especially for those on a fixed income.
I get two meals per can. Sells where I buy it for $2.79 a can.

And it tastes good.

My wife is from Guam. It is the official meat of the island.

Spam, rice, and Tabasco are the three major food groups there.

I like the spicy varieties, but I usually just go for the classic.

My Dad refused to have it in the house when I was growing up, due to overexposure during WW2.

I haven't had any in at least 20 years. Can't get the wife to buy it. She's even more adverse to it than she is to Velveta and Miracle Whip.
Can't get her to make liver & onions, or fry me up a batch of chicken livers & gizzards either.
Otherwise she's a great cook...

I like sandwiches of fried Spam. Slice the Spam thin, fry crisp and eat in a folded piece of white bread, no dressing. Do not like chunks of Spam cooked in dishes as is popular in Hawaii.

Don't use white bread here, but it works fine in whole wheat bread, with just Dijon mustard.

If I have some bagged salad handy, I can add that or dill pickles. I like dills.

A good lazy man's sandwich...and it gives me energy to cook a better dinner later.

I don't eat Velveeta or Miracle Whip, either, and liver and other organ meats are known carcinogens, as is farm-raised salmon.

Haven't had Spam in years except for what's in my inbox.

Spam is kind of like Scrapple or Slim Jims...People always have to say "Do you know what that's made of?" Frankly,I don't care if it tastes good.

Grew up on fried Spam along side a couple eggs over easy.

Spam is, and always has been, made of pork shoulder and ham trimmings.

Some early canned meats that resembled Spam were made of hog snouts and chicken scabs and parts you don't want to even think of.

Just lately I've started buying Spam again. It's handy for a quick snack and is cheaper and tastes better, to me, than most lunch meats.

In addition, I appreciate Spam for its historic role in World War II. It fed us, the Brits, and the Soviet army.

I have two cans a year. With scrambled eggs or fried in a sangawich. I appreciate te historical connection. I read once that Hawaiians keep a bunch of cans under the sink for emergencies.
