Do You Eat (Hormel) Spam?

Spam u bet I eat it. If it's good enough for our ww2 troops it's good for me.
If stored in a cool dry place it has a shelf life of forever. It's in my food stash by the cases.

We have the best fed army in the world.

How does it compare to canned tamales?
When we were kids, we would have local camp outs like in cow pastures.
And we would often have Spam, usually fried.
This is how you can tell the camp food is getting bad. Really bad.
The dogs all go home.

I don't know, I'm never trying either again. I learned that lesson, even if I'm hard-headed and sometimes as stubborn as Francis the talking mule.:)

Grey Poupon's Country Dijon mustard.....

------

Try Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc, or Spatlese -grade Riesling. Chardonnay probably works, too, and is popular in France with charcuterie, cold meats.

Grey Poupon, fancy wines and France... talking about that kinda stuff is a good way for someone to get tossed out of our rifle club for life! ;)

I grew up on a ranch before electricity, refrigeration, etc., Everything we ate was canned. Spam, Sardines, Vienna Sausages, Pork and beans,Chili Con Carne. I got enough of that stuff as a kid and I ain't goin' back for nostalgia. Not only no, but hell no!!
Ya'll never hear of a smoke house?

"How does it compare to canned tamales?"

At one point early in my adult life, I subsisted mainly on bologna sandwiches, canned pork and beans, canned Chili, and --- canned tamales. Even though fairly greasy (i remember the red-colored grease), I got to the point where I actually liked canned tamales, especially if topped with canned Chili. Haven't had any for years though. Back in the days I was working in the oil field, seems like most of the hands survived mainly on canned Vienna sausages. Those I thought were nasty. Per-capita consumption of Vienna sausage in West Texas must have been the highest on Earth - like Spam in Hawaii.

Where the heck you gonna find wood for a smoke house out where there ain't a tree in 80 miles?:D

This thread has made me realize what a coward I really am. After reading about all these brave men that eat a variety of canned mystery meat products glued together with a fatty gel really hammered home just how big a coward I really am. Self harvested and self cleaned, rabbits, squirrels, deer, hogs, are all high on my list of meats to eat. After that I like chicken breasts, steaks, and occasionally real hams still on the bone.

I just am too cowardly to voluntarily feed on foods like Spam, Vienna sausages, potted meats, and other canned mystery meat products. Even some canned hams are pretty suspect and made from pork parts glued together and smothered in a fatty gel. Some of that stuff I really would not feed my dog on a regular basis, especially if it were fried in bacon grease or something like that, no matter how good it may taste.

If you want meat, eat real meat, not some synthetic blend of homogenized meat and other by products. If it won’t spoil over time you have to wonder if it will digest either.

But then I was too coward to keep smoking cigarettes back in 1984 so I stopped a 3 pack a day habit by going cold turkey. I really enjoyed smoking, but I was too big of a coward to continue knowing it vastly increased the odds of my getting cancer.

If the quality control on some guns is suspect, how good could it be on Spam and other similar products.

My wife is from Guam. It is the official meat of the island.

Spam, rice, and Tabasco are the three major food groups there.

I like the spicy varieties, but I usually just go for the classic.

My Dad refused to have it in the house when I was growing up, due to overexposure during WW2.

My dad was just the opposite. On Saturdays when my mom was shopping and my dad had duty watching my brother and I, he would make open faced sandwiches under the broiler with Spam and Velveeta Cheese (which I am sure he got from his tacklebox). My brother and I would say "oh daddy, don't make us eat Spam again". His response was always "We ate it in the Army. If it's good enough for the Army, it's good enough for you two kids".

A woman who went to church with us brought a Spam dish to all potlucks. Her family had Spam 4 times per week. When she told us she made Spam chili one of our 80 year old members just teared up a bit and said "you poor dear".

We had a maid in Okinawa who made Spam Fried Rice.
When we invaded there the locals were starving.
The GIs gave gave them Spam which they were super glad to get.

I find a lot of this funny, and some of it really silly, but then we are humans. You folks who are afraid of canned meat products, sausage, hot dogs and the like should be in a 3rd world country for a while and have to eat local cuisines. There ain't no FDA in Singapore. Americans have as safe a food system as anywhere in the world. Some act like The Jungle was written last year, instead of a century ago. I may find some things on a grocery shelf less than appealing,(like canned potatoes) but I wouldn't be scared of it. Don't really care for Spam, I'm more of a Deviled Ham kind of guy.

I like Spam fried with scrambled eggs or in a Spam/Grilled Cheese sandwich.

And it does come in quite a variety of flavors...

Steer clear of that turkey Spam. That is some BAD stuff!

Also, in late August, I was in the hospital and the breakfast menu included turkey "bacon". Serving that stuff ought to be a felony.

I made up a pot of brown beans and Spam once, when I didn't have any other kind of meat in the house. It was OK, but real ham would have been better. Have also chopped up Spam to put into macaroni and cheese. It was really pretty good. Canned Tuna fish works well also with mac & cheese.
