Chinese Pipe

Not so sure it is a case of corporate greed Bahamaroot. More likely they just can't stay in business without resorting to the lower quality but much less expensive items. For instance, I am more likely to buy a 29 cent ball point pen then a similar one for a buck and a quarter. Unfortunately though it is quite often a case of getting what you paid for.

Evil Dog has hit it on the head. It is us that has made the corporate people in to greedy people. I used to sell Auto parts. The first few years the people would call and ask if we had it in stock and what brand. When I left the auto parts business the questions were do you have it in stock and HOW much is it. Price and quality are not the same. We have put a cheap price on a lot of items without even understanding what we have done to save a little bit of money. Just my humble little opinion.

This is what happens when we, as a society, decide that LOW PRICE is the ultimate attribute.

Sam Walton (and others) fed our addiction for extremely low-cost durable goods, and we were happy to oblige by driving manufacturing away with our wallets.

The lure of "savings" is strong, but at what true cost ?

Google 'Chinese flanges"... A few years ago some large diameter flanges in a southern tier gas pipeline failed... Not built to the spec. stamped on the items....

The National Board of pressure vessel inspectors wrote a book on it!!!
In 1992, the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors put
out a special report called “The Chinese Flange Investigation.” In their report,
they gave documented evidence of poor quality, non-conforming weld repaired
flanges coming from China. These “ASTM non-compliant” products that are
coming into our country are compromising the infrastructure of the United States
and are ticking time bombs waiting to go off.

We have Chinese members here.
Discussing chinese products is fine.
Racial/ethnic epithets are not fine here.
How about displaying a little common courtesy?
We can help if you need it. ;)

from the rules-

God bless the people of China.

About ten years ago there was a shipment of "High Tensile" construction bolts that made it into the USA that went to high rise buildings, to bolt up the steel beams and girders.

Decking was laid down, studs shot, mesh or rebar laid down and then the floor was poured with concrete.

Parts of the building later collapsed.......... before it was finished.
Inspections came up with inferior bolts not up to spec's but the containers were marked as "High Grade" bolts.

Sad to see that things like this happen............. but it does.

Unless I have absolutely NO CHOICE, I NEVER buy Chinese made products! Thankfully my tools and equipment were purchased when America actually made stuff here. When something I own breaks beyond repair, I will opt to buy gently used or new - old stock to avoid the Chinese made stuff. So far - so good although I admit it is getting harder and harder to do so.

At a show....we were selling a product,Chinese gentlemen came up asked my brother about making our product in China! My brother being polite said ,no thanks.Chinese asked what our production costs were,my brother told him that was none of his businese ...his reply was,Don't you want to make $$$$! We said leave! Next day an American gentleman representing them asked about us letting him help us in our dealings with them!! We told him in no uncertain terms we were NOT interested!

Everybody wants stuff made in America but no one wants to pay $300 for a toilet seat because the workers need $40 per hour to live and that means about $60 to the company when you include benefits. It's why S&W closed their soft fitting department. Quality and american wages make most items unaffordable.

I worked for a service company in the 70s that had a TV and then new VCR repair department. They started to get lots of Japanese electronics although we were an authorized GE, Zenith, RCA and a host of other American brands still made here then.
An older electronic tech told me once that Brian this is only the start and will be the death of this country. Pretty smart man and that comment has stuck with me to this day.
I saw the change here in my working career when the cost meant more to my customers than the job done or parts used.
