How and why do you carry?

I know it sounds crazy, but I OC when I'm hunting in the great outdoors; otherwise, I CC rather than become an attention ho, and a prime target for the BG.

Surprise?
Everyone, but some crackhead living under a bridge, knows there's over 300 million firearms in the US, and for arguments sake let's say 1/10th are handguns, 30 million. They know CC permits are up and growing by the day, and that women also are taking a great interest in self protection.
In my small county of 100,000 people, there's some 14,000 pistol licenses outstanding. I'd be surprised if the lady at the CVS wasn't carrying.

I have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, carry all kinds of insurance on my home and cars, and have been shot at more than once during my 30 yrs. on the street. Carrying, concealed only, in retirement just makes sense. I'm 69, walk w/a cane, cannot run away due to my handicap, and am too old to engage in a fist fight anymore. I mind my own business and do not "engage" in road rage. I want to be left alone and go about my business below the radar.

Old Cop...as usual your words of wisdom are shared by many of us retired LEO's...well said.

Prefer to conceal, but do open carry when in the back country.

It is good to have options. One immediate benefit of an OC law, if the CCW shows, no big deal.

Hypothetical time, say your concealed carry license was made invalid through no fault of your own, but you are able to legally own a firearm. OC could become your only legal option to carry a gun outside your property. If OC is not allowed, then said person would no longer have the ability to legally carry a gun for protection.

Stuff can and does happen and having the laws on the books which side on people being able to exercise their rights are (IMO) a good thing.

i carry concealed ALL the time. at home, out and about, in the car... i carry because i am my families first responder. nothing against LEOs or anybody else but i will be there when it happens, not responding to a call. that said, when hunting i do open carry my 57-5 mountain gun, and at my part time job (LGS) we do open carry for obvious reasons.

Pleased, but clarifaction needed.

The best thing about legal open carry is to be able to carry a handgun just about any way you want as long as it includes a holster, not in hand. No worry about things like accidental exposure, printing and other problems I've heard about. I didn't mean to give the impression of tying a red flag on it, but that any degree of open is acceptable in public, and anyone calling in "man with a gun" (swatting) is making a false report, which is a crime. I have no use for commando's and think such makes us all look bad. I am just able to be comfortable with carrying(a handgun) with any different degree of concealment or lack thereof as I see fit and comfortable with at the time and place. I like it, and hope everyone can eventually have the choice. Be safe.

A person carries because of the possibility of encounters with bad people. Concealed carry gives the bad people one less reason to target the carrier.

One could also say, Concealed carry give the bad people one more reason to target the carrier, because concealed carry make you look exactly like their preferred victim- unarmed.
;)

I carry open and/or concealed here in Oregon. I carry concealed in the ultra-liberal urban areas where liberals would faint dead away or call 9-1-1 for open carrying. I open carry in rural areas where it does not raise an eyebrow. Even when I am open carrying, I still have a concealed pocket BUG.

Concealed. Because I don't want any additional attention on me.

X2 I am fortunate enough to be in a gun friendly county that issues permits.
And I am fortunate enough to be in a gun-friendly town that issues permits. Somehow, I don't think that that is what the Founding Fathers meant by the Second Amendment, nor do I think that it is in accord with our God-given right to self-defense.

Middle Georgia is literally full up with people you wouldn't want to be around. I don't know where you live, but it's got to be better than here. White people, black people, pick-a-color people. . .we've got it all right here. That's why I carry all the time; and, fortunately, it's legal to carry about everywhere here.

What is going to happened when open carry passes is the bussines will just put big circle with a slash through it on the door telling you that no weapons are allowed on the property.

The other thread about being caught in a bank when the Bad Guys are robbing it won't happened because your gun will be in the car.

Somebody is going to post "I won't spend my money at a place that won't honor my 2nd amendment rights"
You suppose those bussines in the big city care. (Disney World)

You can't carry into a gun show but people still pay to go in.

After a while people will get tired of open carry and you won't see any pistoleros and all this discussion on "OC" will be gone.
