I was thinking that I needed a .44 Magnum revolver today. Much to ky surprise, I cake back as DENIED with a sbot delay. I had just l, in the past few weeks, purchased my Spanish Mauser and Ruger Match Champion. In neither case was I even delayed, though I have been delayed before.

I have no convictions, have never been arrested and have not so much as a traffic ticket in the last ten years. I have no idea why I might have been denied, and nothing of note has happened in the last few weeks such as being hauled before a grand jury, or even a parking ticket.

I filled out the online appeal form and it said I would be notified of the general reason for denial within five business days.

Now I feel like I have been branded with the mark of Cain for some reason.

Has anyone been through something like this, and been denied by mistake or some such and gotten it cleared up? I actually find myself a bit shaken and the shop was very much surprised as well since ai just gotten a rifle there recently.

What am I in for to try to get thus puzzled out and fixed? Is it possible it will be cleared up easily or am I facing some sort of Kafkaesque nightmare that will see me becoming a black powder fan simply because I will end up giving up?

never happened to me (yet) but I just was reading about it on the nRA link. More than likely just a govt brain freeze. Patience (it is much easier to type than to practice when it comes to getting your gun)

That's why it's worth it to me to get the Wyoming concealed carry permit. Once you pass that background check, you avoid the NCIS process. Only for guns purchased in Wyoming though.

I had a "Conditional Approval" from Miami, FL.

Keep in mind that it is the State Police Department who conducts the background checks, and I know they are super busy.

My recommendation: (1) Call them, with your confirmation number from the gun store and have them tell you why (2) Do your own criminal background check from your state, not from your county. This normally cost around $20

Good Luck

I have been, it is always approved. I never bought enough to do the hassle of getting a pin. I once spent the night in jail in college, I was splosive trained in the Combat engineers, had a security clearance to work on crypto at a large Gov institution.

Ding, ding, ding.

Just a pain, sounds like you need the WY CCW like Inusuit mentions.

And Mr. Chatanooga Phil, yes they said they were going to ramp up and hire more. Here there will be a wait till the green card is approved and the little task of teaching basic english, and.....

I am wondering if this is what we refer to as "Alpha Risk" = rejecting or disapproving a request when it should have been approved?

I just checked the on-line news and I don't see any reports of the FBI or NCIS being "swamped" with a huge surge in BATF Form 4473 approvals. I have read in the past that they claim that if they had better staffing or more time they might have correctly disapproved a firearm purchase from one of these nut cases who purchase a firearm and then commit multiple murders. This may have been the case for the Charleston S C shootings.

This may not be the situation here, but it could be happening.

Good luck with that!

Does Wyoming uses the federal NICS or is it state based?
Is it possible the gunshop made a mistake in giving your info?

Please keep us informed.

Perhaps my theories of Sasquatch infiltration of the government were accurate...

As I understand the process, and I am not sure that I do, the first step is to fill out the online form that I did, which should generate a general reason for denial response within five business days. I am not sure whether anything can be cleared up at that level or the degree to which the appeals function is even staffed currently. I have been delayed in the past so perhaps whatever record or records caused that resulted in an erroneous denial.

I *think* Wyoming goes through the Federal system. I guess I will have to get a permit once I get this cleared up.

Years ago, when I lived in Michigan, under the purchase permit system for buying handguns, I was told that it took a while to look me up because someone with the same name had a lengthy record.

I guess I will know more once the bureaucracy tells me the reason.

Though I remain confused as to why there was never a problem to thisboevel before or even recently. When last I bought a handgun, it went for further processing, but then cleared in about 15 minutes.

I had that happen about 6 months back and the girl from the store called me back the next day saying it was approved, I think sometimes with all the electronic data going through some things get messed up now and then, good luck, I'm sure it'll get figured out.

Yes, do this.

You'll be amazed how fast your purchase will go -- like buying a candy bar that caught your eye at the grocery check out. Well, almost.

Start at your sheriff's office to pick up the paperwork, then go to the bank (for the certified check(s)), then back to the sheriff to get your signature notorized, then to DMV to get your mug shot (take a book to read), then wait (less than 120 days, usually). The sheriff will call you to pick up your card.
