Recently, I asked about the ship on an Aussie TV series called, "Sea Patrol."

I've now seen all 13 episodes of the first season. This link is to a really good episode, Season Two, Ep. 1. The galley girl/medic is new, a chick nicknamed Bomber. The other cast are the same as in the first season.

I suggest starting from the first episode and getting to know L/Cmdr. Mike Flynn and his crew of a coastal patrol ship, HMAS Hammersley. The ship was retired after the first season, with a suitable ceremony, in dress uniforms and officers wearing swords.

Season Two has a new Hammersley, and the electronics, main gun, etc. are all more modern. The foredeck is more sunken, though, prob. more apt to flood in a storm, and they have some.

The courage and camaraderie and romantic intrigue remain.

Be advised that the navigator (Lt. Nikki Caetano) and an enlisted man have a crush on one another that they keep trying to hide and that the XO will eventually be found to be involved with the captain, but they keep it under control, so far. I've seen the final episode, so know how that ends, but won't spoil it for you.

The crew overall will intrigue you, as these sort of shows do, with strong cast interaction that provides the basis for the series, plus their official adventures.

In this ep, some apparent secretive mercenary soldiers have entered Australian waters in a decrepit Taiwanese ship, injured two Aussie sailors and taken off in a RIB (Rubber Inflatable Boat?) of their own, to reach a new mother ship with nefarious intent. They stabbed Charge, the big sailor who runs the engines on Hammersley, and he had to be airlifted to surgery in Cairns, Queensland.

This series is progressive, one episode following the plot set by previous ones, in a continuing story. I like it.

This has appealed to me more than any other recent TV series. It ran from 2006-2011, but looks new if you're new to it. I see it on YouTube, and my brother says it's on Netflix or whatever he uses to stream shows.

Give it a chance, and if you like a good action series with a talented cast, I think you'll find it as addictive as I have. The Second Season looks to be better than the first, a good sign.

BTW, like me, you may have heard of it via the blonde CIA agent on, "Chuck" having guested on, "Sea Patrol" before coming to the USA for ,"Chuck" and, "Astronauts Wives", etc. Her last name is Polish, and she used a different spelling there. Has to make the spelling simpler than it really is to let the name lie more easily on an Anglo palate. The current name is Yvonne Strahovski(y?). I think she was only in ep. 13, Season One, as an Australian Federal Police Agent who had a clever exchange with the XO on the bridge. Listen to them; it's funny. :D

Seriously, folks, this is the best TV drama that I've seen in awhile. Look for the guns. I think I see CZ-75's sometimes standing in for Brownings, but there are some real Brownings. I saw the rear sight on the XO's pistol in one scene, and it was the old Inglis version, but they seem to have been arsenal refinished and some may be newer ones. Rifles are the Steyr AUG. Ship can mount two Browning .50's, but they only come out usually if needed. The main gun is a 25mm auto cannon. It can do some real damage; they blew up another boat with it, using just two rounds.

Anyway, give it a gawk and I think you'll like it. I'm curious to see if anyone else here enjoys it. Like most TV shows, some aspects are predictable, but are well and cleverly told, with the cast empathy that helps to make a good show.

Thanks. I will look for it on Netflix. There is nothing on right now worth watching IMHO. Longmire won't start for a couple of months. Daredevil starts season two on Netflix in March. Too busy buying guns anyway. :D

Lucky you! :)

You can hit the link here to see that episode on YouTube, you know, and see if you like the show.

I've gotten so addicted that I usually watch two episodes back-to-back.

Thanks for posting the link. Checked some of the episodes on youtube. Very interesting, looks like something to watch instead of the drivel that passes for TV here. Frank

Aha! I KNEW I saw some CZ-75's on, Sea Patrol in lieu of Brownings! Here's Kirsty Lee Allan, playing Bomber Brown, the cook and second medic, with a CZ. It has the spur hammer, not the rounder type like the older Brownings and the Mauser C-96. Well, heck: to 1911 fans, it's the Commander hammer.

You can find a lot of photos of the cast on the Net, some not suitable for this board. This one is, and you can see the pistol clearly.

ADDED:

Hmpf! Just looked at that pistol better. It's a CZ-85. Has an ambidextrous safety, the right side lever showing if you look carefully. The lettering on her cap is legible; it's not a flipped transparency.

As you probaby know, the Steyr AUG (awfully ugly gun) is the service rifle of Australia, and of New Zealand, too.

Colin-

Yes, those are on this show, too. Assault/Boarding and island exploratory teams carry them, and they have sailors standing by with AUG's to watch for sharks as the crew swims in an episode or three.

I knew that Australia used the AUG. Wasn't sure about NZ, which sometimes has more in common with the UK.

Australian SAS in Afghanistan and in East Timor use non-standard arms, and I don't know how the AUG fares in fine sand conditions or other Afghan or Iraqi conditions. Have you heard?

Saw an SAS man in East Timor, wearing a H-K USP 9mm in his holster. That was a news photo, not on, Sea Patrol.

The civilian cops on this show seem to wear S&W M&P autos or Glocks. Haven't so far seen a clear view of those guns drawn. But my viewing is just into the second of five seasons.

Couldn't sleep well last night and found the sea patrol series on the computer. Watched 5-6 episodes and generally enjoyed it. Course the Aussies operate different than we do. Think of it as the lost ship but not fighting a plaque but with different story in each episode. Not bad at all. Frank

Started viewing episode 1 and discovered the Auzzies do thing different than my era.
1. boarding a drug boat armed only with holstered side arms ?
2. warning shots with a Aug on a boat that refuses to stop ?
3. A pirate boat that is firing on a boating party using automatic weapons and the Auzzie ship's deck gun is not manned ?
4. Exactly what is the Auzzie boarding party going to accomplice with those 18" Asp batons ?
5. The Auzzie ship carries a crew of 24, where are the other 16 personnel ?

Did not find it on Netflix. Will try the idea of using the DVD to get to you tube and search there.

I just go to YouTube, type in Sea Patrol and watch on the computer.

I'm up to episode 13, Season Two. Seasons seem to run just 13 episodes.

You can click on the linked photo in my OP here, see that episode, and then you'll see other episodes offered.

One exciting episode had Eastern Brown snakes loose on a boat. I know what those are, and it was a chilling thought.

Oddly, Able Seaman Brown picked one up and dropped it in a garbage can and put on the lid. She should have gotten a medal for that! If you think of them as sort of an Aussie version of an African mamba, you're on the right track. I presume that the snake she held was a rubber facsimile prop. The liability factor alone would be huge if the actress had been bitten. The taipan may be worse, but dead is dead and an Eastern Brown will get you that way.

I found it on you tube and we watched the first three episodes. It would have been a runaway hit on US TV or should have been.

I can get you tube through my Amazon fire stick as well so that is good.

Are all six seasons available on you tube; complete seasons?

I think so. I'm in Season Three and see listings through Season Five, including the final episode, which I skipped ahead and watched. I won't reveal what became of he primary crew members in their summary, but that was a good final episode.

Later seasons added at least one character, and I'm not sure yet if NAV (Lt. Caetano) was in all seasons. I hope so. I like Nikki. I 'il reveal one spoiler. She lost ET to a drowning by villains after they became engaged. The actor wanted out of the series, to go to the USA and join the cast of ER, a show I never watched.

One episode featured an actor named Robt. Coleby. He gets around in Australia. He played the scientist whose discoveries prompted Prof. Challenger to seek the remote plateau on, "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World" and you can see him as Lara Cox's boss in the movie, "The Marine 2." Lara in turn played Finn in the third Season of, "The Lost World." To compound matters, Lara also guested as another character in a 2nd Season TLW, where she was joined by Anja Coleby, Robert's daughter, in the episode, "Amazons." Lara and Anja played Amazons.

I'm getting to where I recognize quite a few Aussie actors.

As for, "Sea Patrol", it started off good, and just keeps getting better. I think each season has just 13 episodes. The first two seasons ended with formal ceremonies with dress uniforms and the officers and Swain wearing their swords. The second was ET's funeral, with volleys fired from Steyr AUG's and I think the bugler sounded, "The Last Post ", like our , "Taps." If our Aussie or Brit members recognized the tune, let me know if I have the title right.

I like swords, so I looked up Australian Naval swords. Similar to the Royal Navy model, but some differences. The Brit model has nicer embossing on the scabbard fittings, more elegant.

I agree that the show would be a hit here, but I think it was never shown in the US for at least one reason. Many Americans are very provincial, and will not watch shows that don't have Americans in them. And some here can't handle Australian accents. The British shows here are almost all on PBS, which has a more cultured viewership than do the main network channels.

I am really getting sick of TV. They put out a show, you get interested, then hooked and then they take it off the air. Or they take such a long break between seasons that you don't see it when it returns and end up missing episodes.

Loved the Unit, GONE. Then it was Strikeback, GONE. Then one of the Strikeback guys comes back in The Player, GONE

Sick of it.......

Just finished watching the first session.
Watched it on youtube on my Samsung Smart TV.
It is an excellent show!
Thanks for telling us about it.
Any more TV shows or movies on utube that we need to know about?

Wow!! Women on ships? When did they start that? If I'd only have known... I might have stayed in the Navy. Imagine that, women on ships. Do we do that here in the states too? What's the world coming too?

Les-

Yeah, Navy ships have female personnel. Have for years.

A Royal Navy female medic accompanying a patrol of The Rifles (a famous British army regiment) in Afghanistan received the Military Cross for gallantry for running across a fire-swept battlefield, doing a tracheotomy on a wounded soldier and recovering him, again under intense Taliban fire.

I think she is one of two women who have received that high decoration, equivalent to the US Silver Star , I think.

I saw a BBC program featuring the recovered soldier and his mother. That medic certainly saved his life, under very hazardous conditions. She's not even very tall.

She was also honored by Simon Cowell as a guest on the UK version of that talent show he chairs. "Britain's Got Talent"?
The audience gave her a standing ovation.

However, women on ships can raise a problem, as you'll see on, "Sea Patrol." The navigator, Lt. Nikki Caetano, had an affair with the enlisted electronic tech (ET, Josh) and they had just become engaged when he was mysteriously drowned working a non-Navy diving job. That plot is still unravelling, now into the Third Season. Also, the XO has a growing affection for the captain, and both couples have to keep that under wraps.

And, yes, I do remember the old, "Sea Hunt". I recall those Puma dive knives and that star Lloyd Bridges was an ardent anti-gunner in Hollywood. BTW, those knives with the D-guard were also NATO diver issued, and came in two handle lengths. They're quite collectible now. Both red and black handles were made. Current Puma brand dive knives are improved.
