Presently, I am trying to make friends outside Face-book while applying the same principles.
Every day, I go to the street and tell a passerby what I have eaten, how I feel ,what I have done the night before, and what I do after. I give them pictures of my wife, my daughter, my dog, and me gardening and spending time in my pool .I also listen to there conversations and tell them I love them.
And it works ! I already have three people following me : two police officers and a psychiatrist.

I know several people on the Net whose Facebook accounts were hacked. I got e-mails from them, but it was really ads for electronics.

One claimed to need money, fast. Stranded abroad, etc. But she wrote in French, which Caty knows I don't speak. She's bilingual in English. Is French, but married English. Well, a day or so later, the real Caty wrote to say that her account was hacked, and many of her contacts got that request.

When a Facebook account is hacked, they get the contact list and probably more about those who know the account holder. And they can send you what you think is a legit e-mail from your friend.

I know a Georgian girl at university in Belgium. She commented drolly that on Facebook, you can soon have enough "friends" to invade Belgium! That's not the sort of friendships I want to form and allow into my life.

Facebook seems prime hacking territory for trolls. Beware! And if you have teens at home, talk to them about this danger.

The longer this goes and the more things that go on on FB the more time I spend in prayer that I was never tempted to get involved in it. I know, I know, you can stay in contact with every one you ever went to school with, lived next door to and so on. But then I stop and think...I have a cell phone, e-mail and a snail mail box on the front of my house. Why/how I could possibly need anything more totally escapes me.

Some of my friends and family keep telling me I NEED to join. I keep telling them they NEED to hold their breath.

I cant believe how stupid some people are on Facebook.
I yelled at a person I know because She got in a argument on Facebook and called someone the N-word and is dumb enough to use Her full name on the posts.
I told her that now that they know her full name it wont be hard to find you if they want to all they have to do is check her profile.

So I joined Facebook way back when. This was when only college students could join the site and there wasn't the ability to post pictures. My friends and I used it to get cute girls numbers from campus. I've long since deleted my account. I grew tired of dealing with the endless food pics posts, wanna be know it alls yapping about nonsense, and the general pervasive nature of Facebook. Its become an online safe house for every weirdo out there. It's become way too voyeuristic and serious for my preference. Here is a creepy Facebook fact most users don't even know. The messenger includes your GPS coordinates by default, that's viewable with the person on the other end of the conversation!

I have a lot of friends overseas from my time studying abroad. With the advancement of mobile apps, I can now keep in touch with them via applications such as whatsapp and kakao talk, minus all the nonsense that comes with Facebook. Frankly, I think it's a good and normal thing to NOT keep in contact with every person you've ever crossed paths with. Losing touch or contact with friends etc. Is part of the natural life cycle of relationships. Some grow, others grow apart. The modern day concept of Facebook doesn't allow for this. It's about quantity v.s. quality. I choose quality over quantity......

Yea, just my .02 cents.

Remember when we used to take pictures of our food?

Yeah, me neither.

I realize you are new here but I have to tell you that next to pictures of guns pictures of what we eat are a close second.

We might lose our teeth, our hair or our waistline but our appetite...never! :D

Welcome to the Forum.

Facebook is mostly a waste of time. I have an account under a pseudonym so I can look for posts from my kids and grandkids. i have a lot of real-life friends who post reams of repetitive drivel. I block their posts.

Somewhere along the line, FB began allowing commercial advertisers to post spam. I have a standard response to spam that I can't repeat here. I also have a brief political message, also not repeatable here, that I post in response to political messages.

I might comment on a post, but ordinarily I don't post myself.

I'll have to admit that I'm back on FB (with an alias!) after a five year absence, but it's only to play Scrabble with a friend, not to participate. I don't comment, I don't "like".

Mostly I see people posting things that someone else did or said. No creativity required.

Oh yeah, and the food. Who cares?

Now, I don't want to go off on a rant here...

My Mother shared this old saying with me , "Fools names and Fools faces always appear in public places.", right after she whipped me for writing my name on the underside of a bridge.

Wish I had followed all of the advice found in those old sayings!

The wisdom of the ages.

Friends are people you can meet face to face and physically shake hands with before and after the conversation. They are not some "electronic entity" which you type messages to.

A typical exchange on facebook

fb1- "You look great."
fb2- "Thanks, we should get together sometime."

Both are LIES!

I have made multiple friends here on the S&W forum that I have in turn met personally, both here in the U.S. and in Europe. I have no presence on facebook at all. I tried Linkedin, one time and within a few days was receiving multiple adds for products, services, etc. that I did not want. I terminated that, and participate in nothing outside our Forum. I also do not receive any of my emails via my smart phone, I don't want to be interrupted when I am out anywhere. (And no, no one knows what I had for breakfast).
