A few quick questions for those of you who have G19 ss guide rods installed in your SD9VE/SD40VE. Did you go with the 20# or 22# spring? Any problems? How do you like it after lets say 500 rounds?

Thanks.

I am glad you have asked this Q?.
I just bought my son's SD9VE (less than 3 months old) because he bought a Detroit PD M&P.40. I want to buy the Galloway 20# guide rod from Amazon.

Disabled1, you may want to consider not putting the 20# spring in the 9VE. Cycling of some ammo may not occur. I put a 20# in mine and it would not cycle Perfecta FMJ or Georgia Arms HP. Federal FMJ did just fine, though. I put in an 18# stainless rod from NDZ and now things are running smoothly again.

So just to make things clear, the guide rod for Glock 19 fits the SD models no problem? I've seen a few posts and youtube videos where people have installed it, but have not seen anyone follow up on it after some range time.

Yes, A glock 19 recoil spring and rod will fit the 9VE AND 40VE.
As will the take down bar. But not much else. Maybe a few springs here and there. No barrel or slide interchangeability.

i got the standard 18lbs spring on mine got it on ebay 18 bucks shipped works great!!

So I went ahead and purchased a SS guide rod for G19 with a 20# spring. Got it today and installed it. The fit is a tiny bit more snug than the factory plastic guide rod, and the set screw sticks out just a bit more. These are non-issues whatsoever and I'm pleased overall. Definitely an upgrade, especially for only $16 :)

Do those steal guide rods cause any increase in wear on the weapon? I have run across a few complaints about them causing damage.

Somewhere, a while back, I believe there were some posts about wear where the rod goes through the front of the slide.

Seems there were mixed opinions, but enough to make me decide to not install a metal rod.

I'm not sure how to search this full forum so I am only reporting a distant memory.

I recall it also. Apparently, it wears the metal where it rubs.

I have an SD40VE, to which I added a Galloway SS guide rod with the 20# spring. Was hoping to add a little weight to the front end and possibly see a little reduction in muzzle flip. Went to the range and ran 200 rounds through it. To be honest, I noticed no difference in performance of the gun over the stock polymer rod. No big deal, 20 some bucks.

When I got home and cleaned the gun, I noticed that the right side of the guide rod seat in the frame was actually broken off. It fell out while cleaning.

At this point, I had owned the gun for about 6 weeks (purchased 12/2015), and had run 600 rounds prior to installing the SS rod. The gun had been cleaned and inspected after each trip to the range, so I know the broken seat happened immediately after installing the SS rod.

I've read lots of posts about others doing this mod, and "remarkable" differences in perceived performance. That's one of the reasons I decided to try it, besides just not being completely comfortable with a 'plastic' rod. I didn't see the difference, and it broke the gun to boot.

If you've made this mod and are happy with it, good for you. But it is not something I would recommend to anyone, given my first hand experience.

We have had some technical discussions about non-standard guide rods, including not only the spring rate, but pre-load when installed.

It might be worth while for anyone interested to review those postings which included measurements as well as a link to the manufacturer of the S&W springs.
