Please Remember What Memorial Day Is About

It's NOT about mattress sales. It's Not about Car Dealers Special Sales. It Not about having an extra day off. It's Not just a chance to take a little vacation.

It's about our Service Men and Women that have given their lives Serving in the US Armed Forces.

And Please say a prayer for the past and current and even the future Men and Women that have and that are currently proudly serving and that has given so much for our FREEDOM! Alnd PLEASE don't forget the families of these Men and Women that have also sacrificed so much!

I thought it was a day for Walmart to sell us all that plastic "stuff" from
China. But seriously, at the entrance to the V.A. Medical Center the
sign says "The price of freedom is visable here". That's what its about.

I go to Ft Logan Cemetery and put flowers on My Dad's grave and visit the graves of other Friends.

Remember the heroes from the 28th Div.
My grandfather served in France with the 28th 1917-18. He came home and helped build a VFW post in Maple Shade NJ.

The most important thing that I can do as a parent is to teach my children what this day stands for. They have looked forward to the memorial services for the past 5 years, and now they are participating via their Girl Scout troop and Cub Scout pack. Their honoring the heroes couldn't make a father prouder!

This morning's paper had an article about an old veteran who co-piloted
a B-17 on 35 missions over Germany in WWII. Nice photo of the old
gentleman holding a B-17 Model. The caption said he was always
jealous of those who flew the P-51 Mustang "like the one he is shown
holding". I guess you just need to be an old guy to tell the difference
between a B-17 and a P-51? I sent the paper an email and told them.
They thanked me and said they would print a correction tomorrow.

Lifelong friend and neighbor had this little interview on Veterans Day, (and I know that's a different day) but his story is the story of a lot of us, just from a different view of the same job, some differnt wars, some different countries, all through time. God bless you, buddies.

I drink beer and grill outside, listening to baseball and watching the war movie marathons on AMC and TCM. In doing so, I honor those who gave their lives that I may act like that. Had I died in service of my country, that's what I would want the living to do . . .

Appropriately, my father's grave received his military tombstone yesterday. It is very nice.
