Model 60-4

KevinHee-

Besides the different sights, your gun has Pachmayr grips. Original grips were Uncle Mike's. I made this change on my guns, too, although the Uncle Mike's are also a good grip.

See the post just above this for the Uncle Mike's.

mine came new with the smooth wood grips

Magna grips, or target? You can see smooth target grips in the pic of the gun in box, with Uncle Mike's on the gun.

Someone probably swapped grips, but with S&W, anything is possible.

BTW, both flash chromed and color case hardened hammers and triggers are found on this model. I've owned both.

Smooth target wood grips were on it when I bought it new , I put the rubber ones on for CC

I Just called S&W and got a different answer on +P Rating. The Tech
said that the 60-4 was never tested for +P ammo by the factory, therefore they cannot comment on +P capability.Tested only for 38 Special loads.

Just in case the Kernel or anyone else is keeping track of variations in the Model 60-4 . . . I have BUH7320 that shipped in October 1995 with forged and case-hardened hammer and trigger. Most of the other 60-4s we've seen are forged and flash chromed.

For concealed carry purposes I prefer fixed sights and un-shrouded extractor rod on 2" and 3" barrel lengths. However, I agree with others that the 60-4 is a perfect combination for an open carry trail gun.

My 60-4 has had trigger work done at some point. It's the best J-frame trigger I've tried, almost as good as a K-frame. I got the 63-5 as a .22lr companion of similar size & weight, but the rimfire trigger cannot compare.

I own two of these great little 60-4 guns. From the factory, both havea red ramp front sights. One came with a very high polish to the stainless. Two other friends have them too. Theirs both have black front sights.
I wonder if the factory used what was on hand at the time they were built?
Red ramp guns Ser. no. BFV22xx Ser no. BKP42xx
Anyone else have a red ramp on their gun?

I picked up one back in '09. They look like "mini" L frames!

Dale53 found a Model 60-4 for me to buy... he had to so he could safely get his out when I came to visit and not worry about it coming home with me! Thanks again Dale. :D

Our one disagreement about the 60-4 was on grips... he actually likes the feel of rubber grips for range and carry and I just simply cannot abide them. As a result, I replaced my Michelin™ factory grips first with a set of J-frame targets from a Model 35 or 63, then finally with a set of ebony grips I got from Thailand via flea-Bay. :)

Mine stays close by in my bedroom with a couple of speed loaders of the old FBI +P rounds from Federal. My place is not a good place to break into, and even Santa Claus knocks! ;)

The storage/display case is one I bought at a gun show in Chantilly, VA a few years back and was inspired by a similar setup on display at the NRA National Firearms Museum in Fairfax.

Here's mine #BPM0257 which shipped July 1993.
IMG_2998_zpstygelops.jpg

I replaced, but still have, the original rubber stocks that were on it.

Based on the OP's serial number, my best guess, from my database would be around Feb/Mar 1993.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the J-frame factory smooth finger groove combat grips change the grip angle out toward the back a little? This would give the effect of making you tend to hold the muzzle higher when using a normal wrist angle. My "cheap" Thai ebonies don't seem to have that effect(???)

I applaud your find. I have a S&W Model 36-6 that I purchased new back in the late 1980s. After my first trip to the range, the dimpled, rubber Hogue Monogrip was replaced with a walnut Hogue Monogrip. The rubber monogrip was just too spongy for me. If I could find a 60-4, I would love to buy one, but I am just not in the market at this time.

I have found my 36-6 to be extremely accurate. At 50 ft, I can keep all of the shots in the aiming black, the same at 25 yards. I give it a steady diet of 148gr wadcutters and 160gr semi wadcutters. Now that it is carried, I carry Hornady Critical Defense ammo.

While I love my 1911s and my K38s, my 36-6 WILL be the last handgun that will wilfully leave my possession. I think that you will find the same with your 60-4!
