There's that saying: carry the largest gun you can shoot well, or something like that.

What's the largest handgun you find yourself carrying?

Mine is this 6 inch model 57. It's with a Safariand high ride. The weight is not bad at all in this holster.

After carrying this, my Colt 1911 feels compact and lightweight.

Routinely..........................

I generally carry a 3913; 7+1 plus 8....... though I am fond of my Beretta 92 Compact Type M..... single stack (8+1) about the size of a Colt Commander/ Model 39.....w/ two extra magazines for 24+1

on occasion either a Smith 915 or Beretta 92 Centurion.......... 15 or 17+1 plus 15-20 more..... a PC Shorty 9; 12+1 plus 15 more..... is much more common......................

Rarely a 4 inch N-frame in Penn's Woods....... a 3" 66 will usually suffice.

Largest that I routinely carry is my Walther P99AS, S&W M&P 357, or SIG 226R in 357. Sizewize they are roughly the same. Weight is a different matter.

Fully loaded:
P99AS - 930g
M&P - 1036g
SIG - 1132g

I once carried a 6 inch S&W 629 and and a Desert Eagle .50 at the same time!!! Dual shoulder holsters. Only did it as a bet from a friend! Heavy suckers!!

Routinely would be a G19

S&W 4" model 10 38spl in a DeSantis thumb break speed scabbard or my M&P 9mm in a safariland ALS paddle holster. Normal carry is a M&P 380 bodyguard or s&w 642 in a Bianchi 105 owb

10" inch contender in .223 with factory iron sights. Not in town of course but out on the range. This has to come close to the best reach out for predator package you can strap to yourself and engage in normal ranching activity. I carried that for years, not so much anymore. As I get older and stiffer and more arthritic I find I prefer a 4" sp 101 357 even over a 66-4 in 4".

My usual every day is either a Glock 26, or an Officers length 1911, along with an LCP in my pocket.

During the winter, I'll often carry a full size 1911 in a pancake holster, as I often wear a Carhartt Barn Coat, and it coves it well. I'll often carry a 6 inch 29/629 in a pancake holster when bumming around in the woods.

When working in uniform, I sometimes carried a 4 inch L frame on my hip, and a 4 inch 66 in a shoulder holster, under my uniform coat.

Maybe the quote you were thinking about was this one by
Elmer Keith: "Use the biggest damned gun you feel comfortable
with even if it's a single action."

I sometimes carry this model 29 in the Myres 614 holster.
Occasionally I carry this Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk
.44 Magnum in this Hunter floral carved model 1100. The
blade is Solingen. I made the handle and sheath.
