Trump has ordered a ban on bump stocks

Are bump stocks and similar novelties protected by the 2A? Not the way I read Heller. I get the whole slippery slope philosophy, but to my mind this is a battle not worth fighting. If giving the antis this low hanging fruit, I say give it to ‘em. Makes us look benevolent without giving them anything meaningful. They love meaningless gestures.
I say don't give em an inch.
Please read the following with video regarding "low hanging fruit"

This reminds me of the threat to ban that terrible armor penetrating 5.56 ammo a year or so ago. Had a green tip or something like that. So, I bought a drawer full. Kind of like those AR-15 lowers. I have to stop reacting to all the threats and will refrain from buying a bump stock.

I already stated it in my first post. Raise the age to 21 for the purchasing and handling of any AR type weapon. Most of these shootings involve angry kids trying to get back at teachers or classmates.
Raising the age? Are you so naive to think that a 17year old can’t acquire a firearm or construct an explosive device?
I personally think the way to deal with criminal behavior is observation of erratic behavior. Situational awareness and decisive action. Crazy people do crazy things.
Murder is already against the law, and that kid in florida was bent on murder.

I think POTUS Trump is smart (billionaire for a reason). Talked to the NRA and came up with a plan. Our fault, their fault, nobodies fault we've got a problem, conservatives, gun people, NRA and the Republican Party -- We need a plan-- do something about the mental problem, background checks, school protection, gun free zones, and get rid of bump stocks and any other trigger device that would turn a weapon into automatic. These things are a society problems have got to be addressed otherwise we are destroying ourselves. Just my opinion.

Here in Arizona, a father decapitated his 5-year-old son with a kitchen knife and buried him (both parts) in his back yard. No call for banning kitchen knives anywhere, as far as I know. A hammer, mis-used, can be extremely deadly
John

You're comparing these tools to a weapon that can kill a dozen people in just a few minutes? That makes a whole lot of sense.

After his "meeting" today where he said "I say take the guns first and we can have due process later", I wonder why anyone would support him.

I suppose he will be taken out to the wood shed tonight.

Watch the video and make up your own minds. This is insanity.

Back on topic.........A Bump stock ban is just a kneejerk feely thing.

Those that are bent on doing evil, will find a way.

.

The Vegas massacre, and the sound of that automatic gunfire on TV, made me decide, "that's it, they've gone too far; I'm staying away until they fix this mess they've made of things". Bump stocks, and a whole lot of other things that have been legalised in USA since I relocated in 1999, were not contemplated then. Seemed like a life sentence until President Trump gave me hope that clearer heads can prevail. And it wasn't even Vegas that set it in motion!!! I can't believe that wasn't enough.

I have to think he has a plan. He has for everything else when it seemed that he had lost it. Maybe he just wanted to hear Diane squeal.

Just makes me think that we need as many gunowners as possible to join the NRA

That may be true, but his decision to say stupid things results in sound bites that are not helpful. I don't trust that he is that smart and his prior conduct of saying uninformed things speaks for itself.

The reality is that telling republican lawmakers in an open meeting that they are "afraid of the NRA" and that he is not, is a counterproductive action. It would seem all indications are that he is willing to allow additional restrictions on firearms, including through the use of executive power. How can we let that happen?

After the years of complaining about Obama, I am shocked that the 2nd amendment crowd is not raging mad right now.

What makes you think they're not? Because there's no visible looting and rioting? The 2A crowd doesn't operate by those rules.

There are hundreds of good representatives who are pro 2nd amendment who are too afraid to speak up. There are dozens of good senators who are pro 2nd amendment who are too afraid to speak up. I don't understand it.

I think he is just "stealing the anti's thunder". I think bump stocks are DOA and it is/was inevitable that Congress would ban them, sooner or later. He just beat them to the punch and will claim it was his idea in the first place.
While this may gain him some adherents from the fence-sitters, I wonder how many of his base will begin to have second thoughts about just how dedicated he is to the 2nd.

What would become of the many bump stocks and assault rifles already out there? The AR15 is a very profitable weapon for gun dealers (No XXX walnut, hand cut checkering, hand fitting and engraving here) Manufacture costs are way less than say a Pre '64 model 12 Trap Grade shotgun. Dealers struggle with a very thin margin on firearms hoping to make the rent on accessories. Just wondering?

Nothing will happen until 1) private and corporate money is out of public elections 2) Electoral college is scrapped One person, one vote, greatest total for a any particular candidate wins. Simple? One would think so. and we wonder why so many Americans don't bother to vote. DUH!

I am amazed that folks defend POTUS comments - he has always been back and forth, depending on his 'feelings' and mood. There are many pluses and many minuses in someone who is not from a political background. He doesn't play well with others IMHO and I think he could very well try to please everyone, which does not bode well for collectors.
I really believe that we could lose more than folks think, because although he doesn't make laws he can influence how things are carried out.

Out of context again, as the statement was in reference to the action being taken against a person with a record like Cruz, or any of the others that were reported to the FBI and NOT dealt with. Numerous mass shootings were committed by individuals who were reported to the FBI, and were allowed to proceed with their attacks. San Bernadino, Columbine, Garland,Orlando,Sandy Hook, Ft. Hood etc.

Please consider: “If a wild eyed shouting and cursing individual ran into a crowd with a machete, should an officer of the law disarm and subdue, or wait for a court order?” That’s a little bit like what happened in Garland, Texas and recently in Florida. Difference was, the officer in Garland shot both attackers. (The agent, who arrived with the terrorists, did nothing.)

Old Tex, thats called probable cause and if LEO has probable cause then they are good to go. They observed it.

My problem is when you suspend due process and that is precisely what the President suggested. I believe he has backtracked on that now (at least I certainly hope so). I don't think (and I could well be wrong) Cruz had a record. What he had was a number of incidents where a record could have been created had existing laws been enforced. That is the real problem as I see it.

I handle a lot of criminal defense work in my law practice. There is a huge difference between the President's off the cuff remarks and the reality of what should be constitutionally permissible.
