... Am I the only one that finds these "drinking terms" confusing (or actually stupid), as if defined by someone who was drunk (or high, or both), which seems to make the most sense to me...

Uh, yessir! That’d be correct.

(It’s like anything else. Think of all the gun-related terms we on this board know that those with no interest in firearms have no understanding of. Or, say, specialized words relating to horses, or boats, or astronomy, etc., etc. Lotta specialized vocabulary out there. Hence the word, “argot.”)

I am a scotch whisky drinker, but our state's first distillery has come a long way since it's initial release (Batch 1) in 2012.

The Barrel Strength came from one leaking barrel, and they only got 111 bottles, 36 of those stayed in the state (I got two), and the others went elsewhere. Best bourbon whiskey I've ever tasted.

The distillery periodically releases its Single Barrel.

These two were both about 6+ years old.

They hired former Maker‘s Mark master distiller Steve Nally to get them started, so the stuff is bound to be good. They also have a pretty nicely filmed commercial. Nally used to be in it (I have the old version saved), but got edited out when he went back to Kentucky

Now they just have to expand distribution to Oregon. Been waiting. It arrived in Washington and California not too long ago.

The best way to drink whiskey is how you like it. Many experts say that a cube of ice will allow the flavors to blossom. With my GERD I have to take high octane whiskeys with some ice. It doesn't bother my enjoyment at all. If it is mild enough I will drink it neat. And yes, I said neat.

Ok, help the guy who doesn't drink much (but does actually enjoy a little whiskey every now and then), why exactly would it be called "neat"?

To me, it certainly sounds like one of the dumbest "terms" I've ever heard.

Then I read the definition of "straight up", and that certainly doesn't sound like something "straight up", which to me should be without anything added, certainly not "neat".

I never figured out why you need anything at all to drink fine whiskey. Ice, glass, cup, lemons, limes, etc..etc...

After all it comes in an easy to carry, easy to open, easy to lift bottle that is form fitted to your lips......and no dishes to wash!!!!! bottoms up!

I drank whiskey in it’s natural form. Straight out of the bottle. Glasses was for lasses.

I prefer a good Bourbon neat but I’m not opposed to a drop of spring water or two now and again.

I can not drink Scotch! I have at least 8 different ones in my house including Royal Salute, Chivas, Johnny Black, & Platinum, Glenfidich, and about 3 or 4 others too and won't touch a drop! I have NEVER been able to develop a taste for the stuff - regardless of how much it costs! It's one of the few Whisky's I just can't drink!

My Fav's are:
Jack Daniels Sinatra, Single Barrel, Regular #7, Woodford's Reserve Double Oaked, Regular Woodford's, Blantons, Larceny, Dickel, Devils Cut, Pappy Van Winkle (almost cost prohibitive), Maker's Mark, Tito's Vodka, Mount Gay XO Rum, and a bunch of others - just no Gin or Scotch.

Just box up the scotch and send it this way, I'll take good care of it. LOL.

I drink single malts neat unless they are cask strength. For cask strength sometimes a bottle cap amount of water is needed to tame it down. Washington now has excellent local distilled whiskey's that I also drink neat.

Of course Jack Daniels is actually Kentucky Sour Mash whiskey and not bourbon and there are a lot of really great bourbons on the market for much less than $180.00 bottle. I bartend part time and have been for over 50 years. Neat has always been different then straight up as straight up typically is associated with drinks that are shaken or stirred and then either served with the ice or without. I.E. Margarita, even a Martini, where neat is neat as in nothing else added.

I also subscribe to having a pitcher of iced water and putting in a bout a teaspone's worth to "Open Up" the flavors.

For those that don't like scotch, try something other than Blended scotches, even the more expensive one or the lower priced single malts. Try Lagavulin 16 or Obon 14,or if you like really peaty, try some Laphoig. Two Bit Cowboy's got it right!

But if yuu are a real whisky drinker and want to get your socks blown off try a bottle of 28 year old Red Breast. This is one of my three liquor cabinets at my house. I do keep the cheap stuff for those that don't get great whiskys. There are also 1,400 bottles of wine in the wine cellar and 50 in the kitchen wine chiller.
