Those of you that have been nice enough to read my posts have seen the pistol at the bottom. I finally got an email off to Mr. Minot at Lew Horton last week. I got my reply today. He has almost no information, it's like this pistol barely exists.

What he did find:

Lew Horton did receive 57 of these in 2001 as Melonited 4013's. No other details. That being said, it is not a Lew Horton Special, those runs have higher numbers of that gun. His best guess is that S&W were experimenting with Melonite and needed to sell the guns because as it has been mentioned, S&W wastes nothing.

Anyone think a factory letter might shed more light or should I save my $75?

I was in the same spot you are in now, a couple of years ago. But with a different pistol.

Earl said it was very cool, Lew Horton did sell it, but it was not a Lew Horton run. He suggested I get it lettered, which I did. The letter helped fill in missing numbers and information for our group, but was disappointing for me.

Quoting an email from Roy Jinks regarding my questions in the letter;

"S&W is not in the business to make collectables, and their record keeping on these guns we are collecting today are not very accurate."

You may have better luck though.

Jim

What would you hope to get for your $75 that you don't already know? I drank the kool-aid once to find out my gun shipped to a hardware store in another state... and that info cost me $50.

I'm just kind of curious if it was an LE order or something. I'd read somewhere once that it was. I'm thinking that they meant 4013TSW's. I also wondered why it's a decock only. I don't hear about too many of those in the 3rd gen. I am going to save my money though. I figured Lew Horton would have record of something like that, but they don't. Guess it'll just have to stay a mystery.

Pretty cool that you found out the top end is Melonited (unless you already knew that).

.40 S&W is cheap these days. I'd put the $75.00 into ammunition and shoot the snot out of that beauty.

And I'm not even a .40 guy!
Sounds like there might be hope for converting you someday! :D

Meanwhile, I'm still looking for an ANIB Model 4013 to mate with my Model 4053. :p Except for the possibility of a CHP 4006TSW, it will be the last .40 to go into my 3rd Gen collection. :)

Similar Pistol 4013 two tone Decocker Only made for Colorado State Patrol and so marked with VKN9xxx S/N on barrel, slide, frame right side

This is what me realize that it was an older post LOL
Heck, back then 9mm was cheap. Yes I dug up an old post looking for history on the 4013 I just bought on GB. There was also a post about a Letter documenting 150 VKN9517-VKN9672 sent to Colorado for evaluation - it appears mine actually was issued to CSP1038.
Best, Ed

I bid on that pistol, congrats.
