I just read that if you are not wanting to gain weight using butter to make em with? it was suggested you do a this: Instead of butter, spread mayo evenly on one side-put that side down in pan (of course) and they said it spreads more evenly than the butter does and it tastes better cause of the egg in the mayo makeup. Hmmm, guess ill try that some time?

Apparently you can make anything and call it a grilled cheese sandwich. Grilled cheese pizza, Blueberry grilled cheese, triple decker (three diff cheeses) blueberry mustard? grilled cheese???

No mayo for me on any sandwich.
Down here in S/W Missouri folks use it like we use ketchup & mustard in Chicago.
Mayo on grilled cheese, hamburgers, ham sandwich, fries you name it.
Good thing hot dogs aren't popular down here.
I'd lose my lunch seeing a dog with mayo being eaten.

One tablespoon of mayo is 90 calories whereas one tablespoon of butter is 102. Olive oil mayo is 45 calories whereas light butter is 50.

Doesn't seem to be that much of a difference to me to change the way this iconic sandwich is made. When I am really feeling hungry I will add sliced ham and tomato. Talk about an outstanding meal. Yummmmmmm........ ;)

Mayo or butter doesn't matter.

But include inside the sandwich two
or three kinds of cheese and maybe
an a slice or two of cooked bacon.
some tomato slices. The chesses
can be Brie, American and Pepper
Jack for one adventure. And use
thicker hand sliced French bread.

I do not believe this type of sandwich
has carbs or calories.

^^^ Bread has the carbs, and thick bread has more carbs. No too hard to figure out. Whether you believe it or not is irrelevant. The other ingredients you mentioned are fine.

I am a diabetic as of six months. If you follow the diabetic diet, you WILL lose weight. I eat all the time now, and am never hungry. I have almost no body fat, and my diabetes is under excellent control.

I like butter, but lately I've been using a very, very light spray of olive oil on the bread and grilling in a ribbed skillet. The ribs make for great grill marks, keeps the bread extra crispy and you can cook it longer to insure a good melt. For ingredients I like a Pane Italian or a Rosemary Sourdough bread and for cheese a mix of good quality sliced Asiago and Gruyere. For extras; thin sliced tomatoes and/or some grilled sweet unions. Obviously, best served with a good tomato soup with nicely seasoned croutons and fresh cut melon wedges. Add your favorite beverage to take it over the top. Bon appetite!

I have made grilled cheese sandwiches with tin foil and an iron. The best grilled cheese sandwiches were made with white bread with government butter and government cheese. I could see using mayo, add a bit of tang.
