Why would you use one load in the gun and a backup speed loaders with a different round??? Do you believe one is better?? If so why not use it when you carry and your back up?? Be Safe,

Because you can't efficiently load wadcutters from speedloaders. Speedloaders are faster than speed strips I think the 200 grain Wadcutter is more effective. NYPD Stake Out Squad Jim Cirillo used wadcutter because they incapacitated with certainty.

We also have bears and mountain lions. I trust the wadcutter over the hollow point for penetration.

Not exactly EDC, but I've been known to pack a Colt Single Action Army .44 Special loaded with Underwood 240 JHP's from time to time, usually during Pioneer Days, Early Settlers Days, or similar celebrations. More for historical effect than anything, but I'm sure it would handle just about any defensive situation as well today as it could a century ago.

I agree that you can not load wadcutters as efficiently as the standard bullet profile. You really cannot go wrong with most 44 special loads. I used to use Winchester Silvertips, now I carry Speer GoldDot 200 gr. We have little bears and cougars in the UP. Be Safe,

I carry my 696 more in the colder month, because the extra layers of clothing help conceal it. I'm currently carrying a Taurus 445 5 shot snubby loaded with 200 gr SWC. I like the full wadcutter idea, but only have them in .358" right now. However I will be looking for some. I like the Speer Gold Dots as well.

44 special is likely my favorite caliber.
Packed this Colt from time to time during deer season.
I have since retired it due to it's condition and their cost these days.
Second pic is one I have grown to like very much.
Packs well, feels great in the hand. Less expensive to shoot.
Little later model than I'm used to but..I got over that.

Charter Arms .44spl w/ 3" barrel (older model w/ exposed ejector rod)
loaded w/ factory .44 spl LRN. extra 5 round loose in front right pocket.
Close to my setup.
Same gun. JRT holster IWB.
5 rounds Hornady 180grXTP ammo in the gun and in a 5-round speed strip in left front pocket.

Back when I had my Charter Arms Bulldog, I loaded warm 240 hard cast SWC's when I carried that gun backpacking in bear and moose country. For self defense of the two legged variety, I would probably load a dead soft swaged lead 240 grain SWCHP to about 900 / 950 fps. Sort of like the old FBI load, on steroids. The Gold Dots have a pretty good reputation as well.
