Reserved parking for veterans at the grocery store

I just thank God that I don't need to use one of those reserved parking space close to entrance. I'm still young and healthy enough to walk even from the most distant space.

I've seen signs reserving parking for Purple Heart recepients but since I have handicapped tags I just use that.

Home Depot in the city near here has a bunch of Veteran parking spots. I have used them seems like there are quite a few. I never park in Handicap spots. But I think those handicap stickers are getting out of hand. When working in WA state 1/2 of some parking lots is handicap. I see all kinds of pretty health looking people with placards. I asked one guy I know thats about 30 what his handicap was. Answer PTSD. I believe some people really do have PTSD, but how does that keep you from walking?

Veterans parking seems like a good idea. I haven't seen it yet here in Pennsylvania (I don't get out much). As with handicapped parking there are bound to be lowlifes who will abuse it.

Last year I asked the driver of this Jeep if he used his .30 caliber machine gun for deer hunting. He replied that it was for preferential parking.

They are not lowlifes. They do have a handicap. Tey are morons.:D

Speaking as a veteran, I'm not a fan of veteran parking spaces. Being a veteran does not make me handicapped, Thanks but I can walk across the parking lot just like a normal person.
I usually park out in left field most of the time even if I don't have to just go avoid the dumbassery that is usually in abundance up close to the building.
That being said, I will sometimes use the "dead zones" at the ends of the rows at walmart when I'm on my motorcycle, not so much to cheat and be closer to the door but more to save a real spot for someone else.

Just a thought about the up close parking. Have you all noticed that a lot of women have been wearing workout clothes and are parking as close as possible. If they are going to the gym for a workout shouldn't they park far away to get a little extra help?? But then again some of these women and men shouldn't be wearing these outfits. They make my eyes hurt. I try to park a little ways away to get in some extra steps and I need it.

A while back I read about a fitness gym which had a long set of stairs to their front door. A group of regular attendees were trying to get the gym to install an escalator next to the front entry steps!

Without knowing the whole story, this doesn't tell us anything. The local gym here hosts a senior's class every day. They might have difficulty getting up the steps, but still need some exercise.

Coming up on five years now, I had bi-lateral partial knee replacements. I went back to work after 8 days because I just couldn't sit still anymore. My doc cleared me when I showed him I could climb six steps up an 8 foot ladder. He offered to sign a note so I could get a temporary handicapped placard for a few weeks. The only vehicle I normally drive is my service van, so I thought it might be funny to see people's reactions to a guy in an A/C service van parking in a handicapped stall and going in to fix someone's A/C. I did refuse his offer though, because the best thing for me at that time was to do a lot of walking.

There's a good sized sporting goods store in the county to the west of me that has a 3-4 veteran parking spots.
I walk with a cane and I've had a handicap plate since 1995, if their handicap spots are full I'll park in the veteran spot.

I haven't gone there since last July because their gun dept is all the way to one end in the far corner and by the time I get there I'm all worn out with no place to sit and take a break.
They are the biggest gun store within 100 miles and only sell hunting and fishing goods.

I'm the guy who parks as far away from the entry door at grocery stores and other large-lotted stores. I enjoy the walk, and it keeps me out of the frenzy of having to be the guy closest to the door.

If I'm on base, rarely, I always use the spots reserved for "Chiefs." A friend one day said, "must be nice to have a reserved spot." I answered, "I only use it so I don't take up a spot closer to the door that might be used by a Mom with little kiddos." Sort of a different take on the obvious.

Nothing I've done in my past "entitles" me to special treatment.

One guy's two bits.

Wounded Warrirrs

The sign that is in the WM parking lot is a for Wounded Warriors.

Wrong. If you really were an E-9, you earned the right to use a reserved spot. Becoming a Chief is not easy. Some politics, but mostly dedicated service. The earliest it's possible to make Chief is after 14 years of service, but that doesn't happen. It's more likely you made Chief with 22-24 or more years of service when you sewed it on.

No, it's no an entitlement. You earned it. Don't let anyone tell you different.

I don't know what a "Wounded Warrior" is. If they're going to reserve a spot for wounded veterans, it should say Purple Heart recipient.

This all reminds me of something from years ago.
A coworker of mine had a mild heart attack on the way to work one morning. I wasn't particularly close to him but he was on my shift and I did talk to him pretty regularly. He was an especially lazy and slow person.
Anyway, he started feeling bad driving to work and pulled into a rest area where he had his heart attack. EMTs took him to the hospital for tests, meds and observation. He had a "warning" heart attack. He was a single guy with no family so he called into work to see if anyone could stop by his apartment and bring him a change of cloths and personal items, myself and another coworker volunteered to do this for him. We showed up at his hospital room as the doctor was in there explaining to him what had happened. The doctor told him this was his warning, he needed to change his lifestyle, regular exercise, lose weight, etc. When the doctor got done talking he asked if there were any questions, this is exactly what my sick coworker asked him in all seriousness, "Doc, I've heard that if a person has a heart attack they can get a handicapped parking tag. I would like to get one of those so I don't have to walk so far". The doctor just shook his head and walked away. Myself and other coworker just stood there in silence with our mouths hanging open.

Sounds like a good idea with honorable intentions. Unfortunately, I imagine fake veterans will be oozing out of the woodwork just to get a good parking space as with all the fake handicap stickers. Well, maybe I will be wrong.

Watching the video makes one wish that there were more places like that. As for handicapped parking spots, if my neuropathy is cane bad, I will use them and figure that is what they are for. On those days my legs are good for about fifty yards and then lean on the cane for a little bit.

I am for honoring our debt to veterans BUT the veteran thing and patriotism has gone over board and has moved beyond common sense. Spend the time and energy to operate the VA hospitals and programs for vets as they should and insure all who need them GET THEM. I personally know vets who died that didn't get he needed services they were promised when they signed on the dotted line and THAT IS A DISGRACE.
