***PHOTOS ADDED - SEE POST #38**

***UPDATE: See input from Roy Jinks on post #14***

So I came across a fellow locally today who claims to have 6 of only 25 4" Model 681 7-shot S&W's produced.

They are new in box and two of them are consecutive serial numbered.

These guns are for sale and I have only seen one advertised by Fugate Firearms and their price was $3,750

He asked me what I thought a realistic value might be and I told him I would have to do some research.

I was able to inspect and handle one of the guns today and they are pretty darn cool. I am tempted to work something out with him on at least one of them......but the consecutive S/N's are tempting.

Anyone else had the chance to purchase one of these or maybe even own one?

Love to hear thoughts/opinions?

WOW! Im singing,"If I were a Rich Man."

So tell me......what would a "Rich Man" think of owning one of these scarce S&W's???

But seriously, if you came across one what would you be willing to fork out for it?

I have my ideas.

There is NO mention of this run of 25 in the catalog, but Roy did provide a letter for the one listed on the Fugate website.

Seeing as how you didn't mention a letter, I figured there wasn't one---but that's okay so long as I can find documentation elsewhere.

The only elsewhere I know to look is in SCSW. Therein they speak of several different runs of 4" versions-----and unit numbers in the hundreds.

So, seeing as how we're supposed to buy the gun and not the story, I'm going to full alert at battle stations until such time as I have documentation this is "a very rare S&W".

There IS a letter from Mr Jinks included with the Fugate listing stating only 25 produced

That being the case, then the only question becomes is the price right. My knee-jerk reaction to a price of $3,750 for a 1 of 25 guns is it's way too low, and I'd need a palatable explanation as to why it isn't----which is to say I'd have to get educated----what's so special about these guns(?). Another cursory trip to SCSW suggests maybe it's the 7 shot capacity---but there are other 7 shot 681's.

My bottom line is what's the story we're not supposed to pay any attention to when we buy the gun and not the story?

This is an otherwise standard (4" barrel, fixed sight, Magna stocks) model 681 with a 7-shot cylinder, correct?

If so, I think it would fall into the "scarce", not "rare" category. Then you need to factor in how much in demand such an item might be; personally I like model 681s but I don't see collector obsession for these to the same degree for more common guns, the RM being one prominent example. Also, it is difficult to judge a value without recent sales; I presume the $3750 item hasn't sold?

All that said, if you are truly interested I would take the value of a standard NIB 681, add somewhere around 50% (and double that for the consecutive numbered pair if you are so inclined), and use that as a starting point offer. If the seller has seen the listing and letter that this is a "1 of 25 gun" and their asking price it should be a fascinating negotiation.

Good luck in your decision.

I woulnd't base any value OP upon anything Fugate is charging for anything. He's notoriously overpriced... And I'd be real concerned with the validity of that "letter" as well. Just warning from someone who's done business with Mr. Fugotti of "Fugate Firearms"...

You may not agree with his prices or like him but I think you are going a bit far questioning the validity of the letter.

Let me reword that then. Read the letter really carefully to make sure you understand exactly what it's claiming... Is it stating only 25 were made, or were 25 shipped out... That's all I'm saying!

I posted this same thread on the member only side.....here is Roy's response.

"The 25 seven shot 681 were produced for S&W Police Distributor Richard Sherburne Inc., I Greenfield, MA. This is the only group I know of being produced and they were a special order. Mr. Sherburne had a close relationship with the factory and did get some special items. He was a retired MA State Trooper and very close with the Boston Police Department. Roy"

A 681 seven shot would be really cool to have. If they made more than 25 and you could actually shoot it without risk of devaluing it I would definitely be on the hunt for one. The extreme limited numbers keep me from wanting one for just a collectible.

It wouldn’t be difficult to take a regular 681 and have a seven shot cylinder fitted to it, you could have a gun that could be carried and replaced if needed

I may not be looking at this right, but how much better will this gun put 357 rounds downrange than a Model R8, Model 28, Model 686 or Model 586?
