Done properly, it won't hurt. The toughest part is having to keep your mouth open for the 45 mins. straight.

My buddy is a dentist and insists that a root canal can be almost painless if the dentist wants it to be so. However he claims that many of his patients are so horrible to him that he just doesn't care if he touches that nerve.
I would recommend that you compliment your Doc (on something) and lie while telling him how much you enjoy his delicate touch.

I have had two in my life. The first one they could not deaden the tooth, no fun at all but I told my dentist to turn up the nitrous and let's go. The second one, on the same tooth, they got it deadened but then it got infected. That was probably more painful and the dentist when I called was expect some discomfort and swelling, I sounded like I was drunk because I could not close my jaw. Went in and he said that is infected and my comment was no s Sherlock, even my dumb butt knew it was infected. LOL

I had one done in the mid-80s. Within a year, I started to have severe sore throats two or three times a year....a week of something ending in 'cillin' and I would be fine. Every year, no exceptions.

This summer I had a thorough dental exam by a young dentist; he found a deep 'pocket' beside that tooth and eventually identified a deep, chronic infection. He sent me to an oral surgeon to open the gum and save root canal; the surgeon took out a walled-off ball of infection allowed by a cracked root on the root canal that made a bacterial superhighway. The tooth came out, and I have yet (6 months) to have another of those horrifying sore throats which had been caused by pus leaked from the chronic infection. They had to do a bone graft to fill the hole.

Ask me if I'll have an extraction or a root canal if I have a tooth that needs work.

Got one a week ago. Now waiting on the crown to cap it off. What a hit to the budget. I could’ve bought a Performance Center 952 (again) and a bunch of ammo for all this! Would certainly have enjoyed the 952 more.

I have had a couple. One became infected after about 3 years, and swelled my face but good. 3 weeks of antibiotics did not touch it. Next came almost 3 hours in an oral surgeons chair with a death hug on the arms of the chair. This guy was good, a full professor at Temple University. I got cut from the back off my mouth to under my nose, so he could scrape and clean out the infection. He had his assistant take pictures to show his students. He removed the rest of the root from the top of the tooth. When it was done, I ended up with a mouthful of stitches.

The strange thing about the whole experience was that the original infection was painless, and when it was all done, I never felt a thing from all the the surgery. No residual pain, never took even an asprin. It was like it never happened. Must not be a lot of nerves in the soft tissue

I had an expensive root canal a few years ago
i remember thinking i could have bought 3 nice S&W revolvers for that sum
I had lost a filling and in time the nerve became exposed
at first it just hurt ,over time the pain became unbearable , would come in waves so strong id lose concentration and and just hold my face in agony
Turns out the surgeon found a new tooth trying to grow in the nerves of my old tooth
The surgeon was almost gleeful as he exclaimed hed only ever read of this , never actuslly seen it ! Lucky me ...
About a year ago the capped tooth broke in half it doesnt hurt so thats the way its staying until it does
In hindsight i should have just had it pulled and bought those revolvers lol

I have had 7 or 8 root canals done. I would highly recommend going to an Endodontist for the procedure rather than a general dentist. Would you allow your family doctor to perform heart surgery? Go to a specialist that is all they do. Never have one fail in 40 years, all performed by an Endodontist.

Never had a root canal, but just had a visit(s) with an oral surgeon (DDS and MD) for what started as an infection at a remaining baby canine, and undescended canine above it. After reviewing xrays and dental CT, he opened up my upper area, he told my wife it wasn't all infection, but a large cyst which was destroying bone, and would keep growing.
Anyhow removed the cyst, both teeth, and placed bone grafts to help fill the missing bone, and lots of stitches! Got the stitches removed yesterday, and waiting on lab results of what exactly the cyst was. Oral surgeon says I will be seeing him for the next two years on followup care. The scary part is, no idea of cost yet, depends on how supplemental insurance, Medicare, etc. react, after lab diagnosis, procedures, followup care and so forth? Bet the gun safe could have had multiple additions, and lots of other things instead! Surgeon said not really a lot choice in this, so maybe that is why he knocked me out, and let my wife make the decisions? She said he seemed impressed with this case and took lots of pictures!
