BIRTH YEAR S&W

Being born on 9- 23-42, I am pretty much regulated to the Victory series. I am not a military collector so I have to go with my 1947 K22 LERK shipped on my 5th birthday 9-23-1947. Love those large ejector rod knob types. I also know that is not politically correct. That may be mis spelled. My spell ck. no longer works. Big Larry

What you have is a birthday gun, not a birth date gun. Just as good in my book! ;)

No S&W's for my birth year. But, about 2004 I found a nice little Springfield M-1 Garand ... 5.9 million production ... barrel dated 2/56 !!! It needed very little to correct it to original production condition. Only had to change out the buttstock/handguards. Originals were correct but arsenal repaired w/ bedding compound, etc. It is a nice handy little thing. No matter what I've ever loaded up in it, that rifle has fed it, fired it and ejected it, all the while producing nice round groups. Guess this rifle will have to do for a birth year gun ... until maybe I can find a S&W from 1956. Sincerely. bruce.

Here is picture of my birth year 1951 Pre-15 five screw. It's holding up real good but if it is anything like me I'm certain it has a loose screw.
Enjoying all the pictures and comments.

Correction to post # 15 by Forum members

Good morning Forum;

Birth year guns (or other antiques) do not really hold a near and dear interest for me as in nice but not necessary.

Anyway in post 15 above I did describe my K22 Masterpiece(s/n 905), as a 1946.

A couple Forum members have PM'd me that I am probably wrong in that the ship date actually rules when discussing S & W's. I certainly have to agree with ship date as the only really reliable record and my Factory Letter (see attached) does indeed show August 12, 1947 as the ship date to a Hardware store in Pennsylvania.

What I did find interesting is the actual invoice from S & W at time of shipment to the hardware store......(see page 3 of attachment). This clearly states 1946, and I see the customers order was July 30, 1940 (unless that is not a date).

As other Member's have pointed out to me, the 1946 may be the date the frame was manufactured, but the gun may not have been assembled until well into 1947.

Either way if I ever sell this gun it would be accompanied by all of the above documentation so it may still be anyone's choice but I do not want to upset the apple cart of previously accepted and well known practice of using Lettered ship dates as "birth year" of S & W guns, hence this "correction".:o

PS: Would a picture of my S & W pre-27, taken with a vintage Coca-Cola 6 oz. glass bottle on left and right side of the gun qualify for "Cokes" on a Smith & Wesson?:D

I have some years before and years after my birth year, but the birth year revolver has eluded me. Were there only two built in 1947?

Since you had nothing for the show and tell and out of respect for my elders (even if by just one year) I'll post one for you. Shipped 1/47, barely a hint of a turn line

I got to ask if those stocks are numbered to the gun? I was always told that the late 1040s Magna stocks had square cornered checkering on the bottom of the stocks and yours look rounded??

They are not numbered to the gun; when I purchased the gun it had no stocks, and I bought these from a knowledgeable forum member. But they are period correct with the "sharp" shouldered magnas. I don't know about the checkering. :)

My M&P model which shipped April 1947 and the stocks are numbered to the gun.

As a matter of fact, this is the Pawn Shop rescue that started my obsession with S&W.
