3 INCHES

Since the subject is three-inch revolvers, I am going to slip in a photo of the competition.

1. 357 Model of 1950
2. S&W 624 Lew Horton, wood grips
3. 629-6 Trail Boss - unfluted cylinder.
4. 629-4
5. 629-1, wood grips.

I never wanted ANY .44 Magnum with a barrel under 4". BUT, I met people who had them but didn't want them either, and were selling them for lunch money.

I got the 624 after a terrible problem with a similar gun from another manufacturer. And the price was right.

The 357 Magnum came from an estate sale. I really liked the look. It had an apparent serious flaw so the price was very low. After I bought it I found all it needed was a good cleaning. It is in excellent condition and obviously fired very little. Minor wear on the cylinder suggests it spent at least a little time in holsters. I just liked its looks.

It's amazing just how much of a difference 1 inch makes in barrel length either way, I prefer 3" over a 4" bbl and 5" over a 6".

My only 3" bbl revolvers so far:

657 "Stocking Dealer Special", only 5490 made in 1986.

M24-3 Lew Horton.

I was under the impression the trailboss said Trail Boss on the side cover and had a magna ported barrel. Were there other variations like the one you show?

I think that three inch revolvers are the "sweet spot" for carry. They are probably my favorite in J, K, L and N frames. I have been known to pick up one when the opportunity presents itself.

Model 66-2 Ashland

Model 66-5 Lew Horton

Model 13 (My last issued revolver)

Model 696

Model 65-5 Lady Smith

Model 36-6

Model 60-4 (lower gun in photo)

Model 629-3 Lew Horton, Performance Center, Carry Comp (Mag Comp)

My vote goes with the Model 60-4 with 3” full lug barrel and adjustable sights. I long lusted after this model until I got mine, and once I put the grips on it that actually fit my hand it just gets better and better. I’ve said before, I don’t generally go with the “if I could only have one gun” school of thought, but this one is high on my list of keepers!
