First Gun: What Was Yours?

First was a Daisy BB rifle from my Grandparents when I was about 10, my first real gun was an H&R .22 revolver when I was about 18. Between the Daisy and the H&R I shot my Dads guns, (and ammo).

A Remington 12 ga pump my father bought me in 1952 for $25 at a garage sale. Included 5 boxes of shells. Could hardly lift the darn thing, but I learned to.
A Daisy pump B-B gun in 1948 at the age of 7. About a year later my father took it away because he heard from his boss that his son lost an eye in a B-B gun war which was a popular activity in those days.
My father explained that B-B guns were too dangerous because the kids do not respect them and that if I wanted a gun it had to be a real gun. I had about $8.00 in savings, not enough for a 22 , so I sent away to Golden State Arms in CA for a model 1895 Mauser carbine in 7mm. I paid the entire $8.00 for it and my father handled the shipping.
When the gun came I cleaned it up and fired it to find it was very accurate but it did kick a bit. I used that gun for over 50 years to hunt deer in our woods and about 20 years back I gave it to my nephew who still uses it today.
A great gun and a wonderful memory.

Winchester Model 67A Youth, single-shot .22 that my dad gave me for my 6th bday back in 1987. It was his as a kid and he wanted me to have it. Put a zillion rounds thru it and on the occasion I pull it out of the safe these days, it still drives tacks.

Around 1963 I traded a Daisy Red Ryder for a rusted Marlin 7 shot bolt action. The kid wanted a BB gun because he couldn't get cartridges for the .22. Of course my dad had to get them for me. One great thrill was getting a brick of 500 from R&S Auto (Like a Pep Boys/ hardware/ sporting goods store) as an early birthday present. Lasted half the summer and almost to Christmas that year. That gun is lost to time, no serial#. My nephew had it last. Joe

My first gun was a 6" 28-2 Highway Patrolman. Dad gave it to me when I was 15. Still have it.

My Grandfather gave me his Savage Model 7 .22 S,L & LR semiauto rifle when I was 10. He had bought the rifle new in 1938. I got the rifle in 1961. We were at a cousins farm outside of Buffalo. He gave me about 500 rounds for my cousin and I to shoot. He showed me how to shoot it single shot, he did not tell me it was a semiauto, I skipped a step in the loading process that he had told me. Well, the bolt cycled itself when I pulled the trigger. Was curious as the how and why it had done so. So I pulled the trigger again and it fired. It was not long before my Grandfather came out of the house and said "I see you figured it out". My cousin and I fired up all the rounds my Grandfather had given me and some more that my cousin had. We scrounged up about $10.00 and went to the general store/Skidoo dealer/gas station and bought all the .22 LR we could for the $10.00 (IIRC they were $.40 a box). I gave the rifle to my oldest Grandson when he turned 10. It is still in one of my safes as he is in the Corps and they frown on him having it in the Barracks.

First one I purchased for myself? S&W 439 Pinto. Blued slide and clear anodized frame. No signs it was stripped and cleared.
When my parents sold the family home and moved to Arizona, I got the family armory. This was earlier than my first purchase.
JC Higgins/High Standard 9 shot .22RR revolver
JC Higgins/High Standard Flite King shotgun (engine turned bolt and Cutts Comp choke)
Wards Western Field/Mossberg 46B .22LR tube fed rifle
Winchester 12 12 guage goose gun. Barrel just under 1 mile long
Winchester 70 pre in '30-'06.
Remington 1858 revolver, carried by an ancester, and it got him through the war. Came with cavalry saber, bullet mold, canteen, powder flask.
Remington .36 small percussion revolver
early 1800 cap and ball Tennessee rifle that was crafted in a specific valley inhabited by phenomenal craftsmen. Might end up in a museum when I die.
Somewhere is my grandmother's S&W .32 short breaktop she kept in a hollowed out book. Grandpa was Sherriff and it was kept by her in case there was an attempted retribution. She knew how to shoot. She was deadly with that 1858 Remington, and a Brown Bess. The Bess was last seen in a 2nd cousin's possession. I have the bayonet.
I listed all this as it came to me in one batch.

I guess the first gun that I ever owned was the Stevens Model 86C, tube-fed bolt action .22 rifle that was my Dad's when he was a kid.
The first handgun that I ever owned was the S&W Model 17-6 that my Mom bought and gave me on the first Christmas after my Dad had died.
The first gun I ever purchased with my own money was a Savage Model 89 and I regretted that one and sold it not all too long after.

My first gun I bought was a Jam-o-matic Bryco Jennings .380. It would FTE or FTF every other round. Total piece of ****. I paid $80 for it brand new, and sold it for $90 at a gun show. It taught me you get what you pay for in firearms.

My first gun was a Remington 572 pump .22 I got for Christmas in 1969 at the age of 10. I shot the snot out of it, my allowance being a brick of .22's each week.
It is the only gun I can say I truly wore out. Both the bolt and trigger mechanism had to be replaced from honest wear. At some point I horse traded it for something else I don't remember, and wish I never had. I have thought about buying another, but it wouldn't be the same.
