Spotted a 624, need info

I tried to buy one of these that needed a cylinder change, but the old man that had it would not sell it. He was afraid of liability on his part. It would chamber 44 mag. As I recall, I ran into the story about the wrong stainless steel, but I doubted it at the time. It was more plausible to believe that S&W did not want mismarked guns out there. I would have only used it for 44 spl.

Enjoy your new gun!!!

Well I received a reply to my email inquiry to S&W in the form of a prepaid drop tag to send the gun back for inspection.

Got it back just yesterday with only some sort of packing/shipping slip with the gun (no information on what they had checked.)

Called S&W this morning and was told the gun evidentially passed the inspection and the serial number with this information will be kept on file.

Can’t wait to get to the range with this gun. It is really gorgeous.

Thanks again gang for all the info.

@ Trooper Joe
congrats to your 4" 624.
Mine is in the same # range AHXXXXX and came with the red C on the box. Great shooter if you use .432 lead bullets as the chamber throats are wide. Jacketed bullets do the trick as well, but I prefer lead...

I just got my "new to me" 624 back from S&W yesterday. Turn around time for the testing was a nominal 6 weeks, and that was over the holiday season. The cylinder had no identifying marks on it to indicate that it was tested. The only "new" mark on the cylinder at all was a tiny tiny dimple on the face about the size of a pin prick that I'm guessing was the result of a hardness test.

You are correct about the Brinell hardness test. I had the same small dimple on the rear of my cylinder. It was confirmed by S&W that this was from the hardness test.

Big fan of the S&W 44Spl.

My favorite load which I worked up is a 250g SWC over 6.5g W231/HP38.

When I worked it up here some years back, members said I should call it the Snapper in a nod to the Skeeter load.

Try it, shoots smooth, hits hard.
