I just picked up my second 15-22. I've had the first one for about 2 years and an empty mag has always just dropped out; however, on my second one, not only will the mag not drop out, but you can feel resistance when you pull it out.

Has anybody else had a tight mag well on their 15-22? Did you do anything about it? Considering either calling S&W or getting some fine grit sandpaper.

clean out the mag well really good and scrub it and try it again

Have you tried the older mags in the new gun? Some new mags (over here anyway) now have a rib along the back and it stops them dropping free. If its that just sand/file it off and you'll be back in business.

The two rifles are both PCs with the short 10-round mag. I gave the mag well a good cleaning, then did some mag tests.

I swapped 10-round mags between the old and new rifles. The new mag drops free from the old rifle and the old mag drops free from the new rifle but the new mag won't drop free from the new rifle.

At the same time that I bought the new rifle, I also bought a 25-round mag. That mag also drops free from the old rifle but not the new one.

All that said, the 10-round mag from the old rifle appears to eject from the old rifle with greater vigor than it does from the new rifle and with greater vigor from the old rifle than the 25-round does from the old rifle. That is, while it's possible the new mags may be bigger than the old mags, it still seems like the mag well may be tighter.

Unfortunately, I don't see a noticeable difference in the seam on the mags such that sanding the back of the mag a bit would make a difference.

Any other thoughts?

One more thing, I had 5 other mags sitting around, three short 10-round that are 5 years old, one short 10-round that is new this year, and one 25-round that is new this year. The three old mags drop from from both rifles but the two new ones only do from the old rifle. Also, I still notice a slight difference in that the old rifle throws the mags from the mag well more so than that it does the new mags. I think it is mostly that the new mags are larger, and the mag well may be just a bit tighter.

Just wondering if you have found a solution to magazines not dropping free.

I had some mags that wouldn't drop free, but I noticed ware marks on the mags and just did a little light sanding, check it again and sand some more..
